Credit Card Fraud Attempt Question

Hi

I got a message from my credit card provider saying that a transaction had been declined because it was suspected fraud.
On speaking to them I confirmed that it was not me or my card (which I still had) and learnt that the transaction attempt was at an ATM in India.
My card was closed and a new one has been sent.
My old "cloned" card has only been used at 4 locations in recent months and I don't use it for internet purchases.
Presumably if it had been cloned in the UK, it would have been used at a UK ATM without difficulty. So my query is how could the card details (with my pin code presumably) end up in India?
Doesn't make sense to me.

The details will have been sold and a counterfeit card produced. Card details can end up anywhere in the world, best not to worry about it.

Thanks for the reply. Find it strange but I guess you are right, I will never know, but it's a little concerning that it can happen to an occasional used (and selectively I thought) card.

Actually, it would be very difficult to use a cloned card in the UK as most ATMs now use Chip and PIN rather than just the magnetic stripe. Some ATMs abroad do not have Chip and PIN technology so are targets for cloned card usage.
