Help! Leaking lockshield valve

I was trying to remove a radiator for decorating that was caked in paint etc. I think I've damaged the lockshield valve as it is leaking constantly and is loose on the pipe (I can spin the whole thing round).
What can I do as an emergency fix until we can get a plumber out? Not the easiest person to find on a Sunday

What bit is loose? Take the plastic top/knob off and see if you can tighten it with an adjustable spanner? For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

Tightening the nut under the valve pretty much stopped the leak, plumber coming out tomorrow. I knew I should have left water well enough alone!0

If tightening the nut under the valve stopped the leak then that should be it, it just needed a nip up. Unlikely there's anything more for the plumber to do.0

Got him to remove another couple of radiators, didn't pay a lot. Will take a look at what he's done re. capping the removed rads tonight and will try it again in future once I get over my initial shock! Plumbing looks very easy in theory, but not fun when water is going through the floor...0
