I guess what I'm trying to do is get a feel for the 'real' costs of what being home owner is

It depends entirely on the actual property, and - to a very large extent - on your own preferences, desires and DIY abilities. There is no simple rule-of-thumb.

That's pretty much it. It sounds like there has been a decent level on ongoing maintenance. Once thing you might want to do is have a good knock on the internal walls to see if the plaster has blown.

I think it is too random to work out, as each house will differ in what nedsto be done, and people differ in what they see as urgent, how much they do themselves, costs of getting skilled people in, in different parts of the country etc.

You can budget for stuff such as an annual service of the boiler, and think about how often you are likely to want to redecorate and budget for that.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
  • I was wondering something similar (how much to be notionally putting aside for appliance replacement and decorating), and came across this website

I can't vouch for the accuracy, or whether the UK would be the same as the USA.
