Problems getting to BIOS

I want to get to my computer’s BIOS. And if I read the instructions for the NVIDIA nForce2 motherboard correctly I key delete at set-up. However, as I turn the computer on, the DOS screen appears only momentarily and I am unable to key delete quickly enough before the process to load windows commences.

Am I doing something wrong? How do I work round the problem?

  • Just keep tapping the delete key from the moment you power on...

That does not seem to work. I have finger over delete key even beforeturning on the button at front of box, I can't be any faster.
  • Are you using a USB keyboard? If so, USB Legacy or Keyboard Support may not be turned on in your bios. Try a PS/2 keyboard or a USB to PS/2 adapter...

Yes. How much are the adapters? fFor what may likely be a once in a lifetime use I want to avoid expense. Looked at Maplin's site ( there is a shop in nearest town) and they are not cheap, if you bear in mind my comment on expense,

A standard PS2 keyboard can be had for a couple of quid - cheaper than an adaptor from Maplins!

I am a first class idiot I just jumped to conclusion without checking what type of keyboard I had. It is a PS/2:o

    Sorry folk!

Any other willing suggestions now I have disgraced myself so badly?
  • The adapters are around £2.50 on ebay from numerous sellers or, as espresso says, pick up a cheap PS/2 keyboard - always useful to have a spare...

**Ignore - just seen above post**

Sure you have checked this but are you sure the delete key is working?

Assuming that Del is the correct key to get into your BIOS, simply keep tapping it repeatedly immediately after power up.

Do you have a F key lock and if so change it's state.

    Just try different keys like F1, F2, CTRL+ALT+ESC, DEL, ESC, CTRL+ALT+S, CTRL+ALT+INS, CTRL+ALT+DEL, F10, F12, Fn+F1, and F3.

Use the PAUSE key to stop the bootup and post the BIOS/Motherboard information that you see and we may be able to give you the correct key without having to guess. If you pause it it may give you time to see the key to use anyway.

Something like "AMI (American Megatrends, Inc.) BIOS"

Using Pause brought up the DOS screen and I managed to reset the peripheral item to Auto rather than Disabled. In Device Manager it is now shown with a big ?? Now, even though I have a single computer, I intend to get a router to replace my Binatone ADSL modem, as I am told it may provide a more stable connection. ( My speeds have been dropping steadily recently, with IP Profile at 5500 2/3 weeks ago and now down to 4000.

Any cheap router suggestions for me?

    Thanks for all your help:beer::beer::beer:
