Painting a summerhouse and a shed

Hi All,
We have a summer house and shed that came with the house when we bought it a few years ago and they are in need of some TLC this year.
I've never had to paint exterior wood before so it's all a bit confusing. I'd assumed it would be like internal emulsion - sand back, wipe down then repaint two coats, marvel at handiwork  unfortunately now I'm lost in the world of preserver, stain, paint etc...
Would anyone be able to help me with my best plan of attack to give them a new lease of life?
I've taken some pics and shared from Google photos here:
Summer House 1 link
Summer House 2 Link
Shed 1 Link
Both need new roof felt but I think I've got that bit under control from looking at some YouTube vids.
Product wise I've seen Cuprinol Garden Shades and clear Garden Preserver, but as I said I'm at a bit of a loss about what to do first and so thought I'd ask before wasting money on product and putting a load of time into the wrong thing.
Thank you for your help!
Dan

Research continues...
I've found this from good ol' Ronseal whose products I've used before and trust, the descriptions seem to suggest that I can just wire brush off the loose paint and then go nuts with this.... any ideas?0 -
I have pretty much the same summer house as that one minus the side windows (yours is the billy oh one)
Your summer house is painted in cuprinol shades by the look of it. As ours is too. If you want to change the colour your going to have to give it a good sanding down. If not just try and match the colour by going to somewhere which stocks a good selection of shades. Match the blue, the framing is obviously done in white so no problem there.
First things first get the roof felt done first. Purchase some new strips of wood for the front edge of the summerhouse, make good the windows and secure in place (might need some beading), then paintEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
Thanks wrightk that's really useful advice. When you say to purchase new strips of wood for the front edge, is that the bit at the front on the roof? The wood that's there isn't in bad shape, it's just the paint that's peeling - would you say it's worth replacing that over a sand and re-paint?
Sanding's no problem, i have an electric sander from when we did a lot of interior decorating so it'll make light work of the summer house.
Would you just go with another garden paint like the Cuprinol / Ronseal or would I need a preserver first before painting?0 -
from the picture it looks like there is an entire section at the front edge thats missing? (unless i need specs). Its not the same as the right hand side....
I wouldn't go for a preserver first. When i painted ours last year i painted straight onto the timber, the shades acts as a preserver aswell, but it does need a couple of coats
when you have a colour scheme like that (ours is exactly the same aside from the summerhouse being green and the framing being cream) the white/cream always deteriorates a lot faster and needs touching up frequentlyEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. Ok i do need specs. I can see now theres a flap of felt hanging over. In that case i would take those strips off (if they are screwed in). Get some new felt up and let it hang down. Repaint the edging strips while they are off (give them a good 2 coats). Reattach them pulling the felt down at the same time jamming the felt in and then cut away any excess
The blue colour looks fairly good to be honest. If you can find a match for it i'd just give it a good recoatEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
This is ours (on a horrible day)Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
Right, I did a lastminute run to Homebase. 2 rolls of Iko black felt, tub of felt adhesive (Horrid stuff!) and 4 pots of Homebase own exterior paint on 2 for £26.
I finished the shed roof just as the light was going so will embark on painting next weekend. I did a tester pot with a bit of sandpaper first and it looked great so fingers crossed this time next week I'll have both projects done :j
Thanks again wrightk, I'll keep you posted!0 -
We're looking at painting our back fence. We were advised to use Valspar paint as it's guaranteed not to flake, peel, blister, etc and the colour is good for about 10 years. Other paints need re-doing every year or so. Also the range of colours is really good. We're thinking of using this paint.0

Hi everyone,
Sorry I've been so long, this thread is long overdue an update. We've been getting all sorts of DIY done over the past 6 weeks or so. One of those jobs was the summer house and shed which I'm happy to say are now pretty much done :j
The job list has been:-
Paint both the shed and summer house
-
Re-roof both the shed and summer house
-
Replace the acrylic windows in the shed
-
Tidy the shed....
Other non-shed jobs have also been completed, I've spent today painting the garden gate (Need a new one next year I think but a new coat of paint might paper over the cracks for a while;))
It's been a long job but I'm really happy with the results. Goes without saying we've saved a fortune compared to either replacing the buildings or paying a tradesman to undertake the work. I've treated myself to a new lawn mower with the cash I've saved:D

Big thanks to wrightk for all your help:beer:0 -
