Contribution based ESA query

A good friend is living in an area where UC has been introduced. Has health issues & is thinking of claiming ESA. Currently in work (p/t). Has worked apx 30 yrs.
Can they claim Contribution based ESA on its own or do they have to claim UC first?
Also, can I have confirmation please that my belief is that if placed in WRAG Cont based ESA will only last a year but if placed in Support Group Cont based ESA currently is not time restricted?
And that is a big IF of course. Are the descriptors required for Support Group easily found on net? Or in other words can someone post me a link to them if possible. thx

I don't know about UC compared to ESA.
You are right though that contribution based ESA is restricted to one year unless in the support group.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

First of all your friend would need a fit note from their doctor to apply for ESA.
As regards Universal Credit it may be best for him to telephone the number in this link as there are restrictions on whether you can claim UC if claiming ESA. Contribution based ESA is also outside of the scope of UC unless he is also eligible for income based ESA. (and the latter is only in some areas!)
Sorry, it is complicated.

Link for descriptors

Also, if he has only been working part time then he may not be eligible for contribution based ESA so will need to mention this when telephoning.0
