Living in Japan, but have 3k to save

Decided to actually be mature for once in my life and put some money away to hopefully help me a little later in life (even if it's just for a few years). Sorry if any of the things I say are a little naive, but this is the first time I've looked at saving.
Been doing a little preliminary research into savings and it looks like I probably can't open an ISA in the UK to get some interest as I'm not a UK taxpayer any more (having lived in Japan for over 3 years). There are ways around it, but I'd rather not add tax evasion to the list of things I could be put up in court for. So with that in mind, this message is going out to any economics/accounting/caring-about-their-money people out there.
Basically, I've got about 3,000-4,000 pounds that I'd like to put in an account or investment that will give me a decent return without risk of losing the initial money I invest. I'm currently a HSBC account holder in the UK. A savings account or investment in the UK would be preferable, as it would be easy to transfer from my UK bank account. Am staying well clear of anything Japanese in which to invest my money as the rates are pretty much 0%.
I have had emails from a few members of Nigerian royalty, who said they could give me around $10m if I give them my bank account details and invest the money with them, but I'm not convinced!!!
Thanks for any advice anyone out there can offer me. If you need me to provide any more info about my circumstances, let me know:)

Normally, I'd say have a look at some of the offshore banks and BS's, which will give you interest tax-free, since you are outside the EU. Unfortunately, 3-4k, is well below their minimum limits.
Since you already have an account with HSBC, have a look at their online saver account, currently paying 6.25%. If they will accept a form R105 (non resident for tax), submit it to them, to get your interest gross. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
Thanks. They do accept the R105 forms and the online saver account looks like it could be a good bet for me:)0
