Architects Quote

Hi,

We are planning on having an extension to our house and we have just had an estimate from the Architect, now we have never had a quote from an Architect before and so we have no idea if this is a reasonable quote or not.
We are having an extension with the dimensions of 3mx5.3m,this is the quote from the architect:

Stage 1 (Planning/COLD)
Measurement survey and photographic survey of the existing site and buildings
Producing sketch scheme for client approval/Preparing full design drawings
Preparing and submitting planning application, dealing with all associated works
Preparing and submitting design statement and supporting information. £850.00 plus VAT

Stage 2 (Working Drawings)
Preparing and submitting application for approval under ‘Building Regulations’, dealing with associated works
inc. Preparation of specification.
£850.00 plus VAT
Other fees that may become applicable:
Structural engineer TBC upon scope of work

Thanks for looking
Tim

    That's a good price.

I wouldn't expect to pay much less than that.

Are they registered with the ARB or RIBA? Only asking as sometimes people think they're buying an 'architect' but aren't.

Thats good to know, we do have someone else coming on Monday to give us another quote. Yes they are RIBA registered.

Seems cheap to me. I paid more than that for a technician to deal with drawings for a smaller extension than yours.

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘In my home’ board to the ‘Is This Quote Fair?’ board, where it is better suited.

    Regards

Recommendations or contact with previous clients would be a good way forward. This would be a clincher for me.
  • If the architect has done many such extensions cut and paste is money for old rope.He doesn't re invent the wheel every time.He will have templates for everything and just adapt a package to suit the customer.

I had quotes a little higher than that myself for a garage conversion roughly twice the size of yours.

Have you considered DIY? I did it in MS Excel over a couple of evenings. It was really straight forward and saved £2k from the budget! There are thousands of examples out there on the internet.

Hope it isn't against the rules, if you could share them with me?
