If Section 75 still applies if a credit card is used for only part of the purchase price of an item (for example item cost £150 - paid for by £50 on Credit card and £100 on Debit Card or cash) am I correct in thinking that the card company would only liable up to the amount spent on the card rather than the full cost ?

The Credit Card company and the retailler are equally liable. See martin's article here... http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/consumer-rights-refunds-exchan#pay0 -
I agree - so long as the item you purchased is for more than £100 but less than £25000 then section 75 of the CCA applies and you are covered even if you only paid £1 by credit card.0
