When the industrial priorities of the country changed in the '80s, many would argue this was a good thing for UK plc.

However, we failed to work out what to do with some of the places which were impacted the most. We are still paying for these places today.

Maybe we should just scrap a seaside town in demise, before it becomes a long term burden.

The UK seems to be two countries. One that exports high cost services (and some tech) and does so from high cost locations demanding high rents and high salaries. And then the rest of the country which if it were a separate country would have a lower currency value, lower salaries vs rest of the world and could compete fairly on exporting "stuff".

So, it seems that the high cost services revenue needs to subsidise the rest while we remain one country.

We need more companies like the BBC to move out of London. More government offices to be located somewhere else.

are you sure the rest of the country would have a lower currency and export more?

maybe they would just be poorer and just have to import less.
Not so many iphone 9s and instead a few more samsung 1s
Not so many foreign holidays and a few more trips to blackpool

    That sort of stuff

Its also likely I think that the rUK would have to increase taxes and/or decrease services. Maybe the rUK would become more like Spain sort of level richness.

London on the other hand might boom. Taxes could be cut significantly which could offset a lot of the appreciation of the London pound. Or maybe with a huge labour voting block they might shoot themselves in the foot

tories are/were seen as the party of immigrant-haters and London is full of immigrants. That might be less true today but it takes quite some time for the voters to believe it or jump ship.

Also the number of students have boomed and London is a 'student town' with lots of universities who tend to vote left as they know no better.

I wonder if demographics plays a role? Is it just anecdotal that families and old people move out of London? Are the outer burbs and commuter towns bluer than average?
    I think....

To be fair ordinary people cannot live in London. Most are either in very well paid jobs or the government is paying their rent. I know of one young couple with a baby (currently renting a one bed flat) they will have to move because she wants a house with a garden and will not find one in London that they can afford. At the moment she is on maternity leave but soon she will have to return to work and sort out childcare or stay at home and lose her salary.

Long term, the BBC is convinced it will save a serious amount of money by relocating to the likes of Salford.

It had no choice but to try and adapt, otherwise it was a sitting duck target for the Tories, who would love it to be replaced with the Murdoch Broadcasting Empire (MBE).
