Munich is one of my favorite cities. Make sure you go to the tower in the Olympic park, the BMW museum is worth a visit too, they have some lovely vintage cars there, I believe you can arrange a factory visit if you book in advance. The old town is beautiful, with lovely little streets and beautiful buildings. It's (as least was) very clean and very friendly, but I don't know how it is now with the immigrant crisis, Munich has taken a pretty big hit, I hope it hasn't spoilt it.

I've been to Berchtesgadten and Salzburg, but it was 30 years ago!
Probably not a lot of help :o
But I remember the scenery being beautiful :)

Munich has superb public transport, so hiring a car to see the city probably won't be needed. Just get all day tickets that civer the buses, trams, U & S-Bahn, Some hotels actually include them in the room rate Train to Salzburg is superb and personally I found the bises good - although I didn't go much out of the emminently walkable city centre. I also noted plenty of trains/buses to Becthesgaden from the station just before Salzburg.

The plan at the minute is 4 nights Munich. Train to Salzburg where we will pick up a hire car, drive to Berchtesgaden. After 5 nights drive back to Salzburg. Two nights in Salzburgh before travelling to Vienna for 3 nights :D

Our accommodation is booked. Hotels in Munich are extortionate so we are 3 nights in a B&B (that's all they could take us) and one night in a hotel. Berchtesgaden, we have an apartment and hotels in the other two cities :D
  • A car around Berchtesgaden will be useful - there's a great documentation centre at the top of Hitler's mountain if you like history. St Bartholoma church on the Konigsee is beautiful too, and there are lots of sports activities and walking to do. We went to Hellbrunn Palace while in Salzburg. Munich is my favourite city - a good place to start is a free walking tour

BMW World is a favourite of my husband, Dachau is easy to get to and very interesting if you like history. Deutsches Museum is amazing, and last time we went to the Nymphenburg Palace which was really interesting. You can do a day trip to Neuschwanstein castle, there are plenty of organised tours to do this and it's probably the easiest way on a day trip - we did it ourself on a road trip but it took the whole day to walk between the castles and see everything. The Schneider brew house in Munich is amazing for beer and food but gets busy quickly so book a table or get there early. Also the chain restaurant Vapiano in the Funf Hofe shopping centre is yummy and good value
