Laminate or door in first?

Quick q

We have laminate to lay and a door to fit in a doorway. The laminate will go up to the door, then meet carpet the other side of the doorway.

For ease, do we put laminate down first, then fit the door or vice versa?

Also a friend will lay the laminate. He used to do it for work, so knows what he's doing. Him being a nice guy, he'll probably undercharge us, but I want to pay him a fair rate. What is a fair rate for laying 40m2 of laminate?

Thanks.

    Hi bylromarha,
I recently had 45m2 of laminate put down.and it cost £700.
The carpenter had hung the doors a few weeks before, but flooring guy removed them before laying laminate,so I would suggest floor first, then doors.
    Good luck.

  • I would get the floor done first and then have the doors hung.

I've just had 35m2 of laminate put down by a joiner for £250, took a day and a half.

I'd say do the doors after too, if they go on before they'll probably a bit of trimming after anyway.

Take a step back and think logically.

A floor, once laid, is a set and definitive height that cant be changed, a door can be bought to length and/or trimmed to a suitable height. So floor first, then door.

As for cost, I've only ever "DIYed" laminate, but assuming a fairly "square" room, then id only expect to pay the "day rate" for a worker, id expect 40m2 to be done in a day, 2 at most, so between £120-£140 a day.

I'm assuming the £700 was including the cost of the laminate, not just the fitting charge?
