Washing machine tripping electrics even when plug switches off!

Help please!! My washing machine was part way through a cycle and tripped the electrics. I tested my kettle in the same point and that works fine, and as you would expect the kettle doesn't work when the plug is switched off. But when I have the washing machine plugged in, but switched off at the plug, it still trips the electrics even though there is no hint that the digital screen has started up? When it is plugged in and the plug switched on, the machine flashes up as if to turn on then mmediately trip's the electrics.
Help please!!

Thanks guys. It's a moulded plug and thankfully I have extended parts warranty which I hope I can claim against! I'll ring them tomorrow and find out0

You can simply cut the plug off and fit a new one...
Is it tripping an RCD, or simply the MCB for that specific ring main?No free lunch, and no free laptop

It will be a Neutral/Earth fault in the washing machine and a single pole switch on the socket outlet.0

I'd agree 100% with Risteard,
N-E fault and SP socket,0
