can't see the connection there. Just because someone chooses not to be an unpaid revenue collector doesn't automatically make then bad at their trade.
Yeah, plumber might be the best in his trade, however he decided to cheat on HMRC by avoiding paying Vat and plumber decided to go with cheater and OP who knew about cheating was cheated as well. Served him right.

You've never had a discount for cash?

If they should be registered, they shouldn't be avoiding it. After all, it's the customer that pays the VAT, not the company charging it. We get to claim back what we've paid out, so it's not strictly unpaid.

It's about being scrupulous, about attitude, about treating people well, about taking finances seriously, and about having a traceable and long lasting business name, not about being good at a trade.

If you're not VAT registered and don't need to be, why dupe people into paying cash? To avoid income tax instead?

I still don't see any connection between avoiding tax and the ability to do a trade.

No, I haven't. I have heard about and I was offered. I have also heard about five fingers discounts and about items falling off the truck. After all, it's about money saving, isn't it?
Look, I am trader myself, this year I have exceeded VAT threshold and had to register. And I have become HMRC tax collector. If I was cheating like OP and his plumber did I wouldn't have to.
Since registering my prices went up by roughly 12%, since I have discounted by VAT amount tools, fuel and other similar things.
And if potential new customer after given quote asks me " How much it would be if I pay by cash?" I just add random percentage to the amount quoted. I have enough business as it is due to good work I do and believe or not, competitive prices I have.
I still don't see any connection between avoiding tax and the ability to do a trade.
As I said earlier, this plumber could be the best plumber in whole of Great Britain, yet OP knew he/she is dealing with dishonest man and OP went for it. Just to save few quids.

Nevertheless, OP is sucker, he/she tried to be clever by cheating on VAT and he has got conned. Reminds me of a story when bloke was paid by fake notes for selling marjoram as weed. Just go and report it:rotfl:

    a) I didn't say that there was in the first post you quoted.
    b) I specifically said it wasn't in the second one you've just quoted!
