Just thought I would update on how I got on today.

I popped into the shop I bought it and looked at the latest model of the fridge freezer we have, which is identical inside and outside apart from a different LCD panel on the front and low and behold the hinge has been completely redesigned! Now it's an actual hinge and secures to the underside of the door by a plate and two screws.

So I called AEG and the lady looked at the history, and told me that I should go ahead with the warranty repair as she said AEG operate a 3 repair policy (same fault) and when that fails then they will replace the appliance for the latest model nearest to the original.

She said its all recorded on the system so won't be a problem if/when it happens again, and really apologised that I had to have the 3rd repair.

So 3rd door on order, and I know it will fail again and when it does I can call them and get a brand new replacement.

I call that a result, no need to talk consumer law after all.
  • We bought a cookerhood, gas hob, freezer, fridge, microwave and oven from AEG. The cookerhood had a part missing that attached the hose to the unit and so could not be fitted. When the part eventually came we found the LED lights under the cookerhood were not working. The LED lights were ordered however the engineer thought that it was not the lights afterall and possibly the circuit board. We are still awaiting a new circuit board.

The gas hob also had a part missing and the gas fitter had to go and buy it before fitting it.

The freezer kept tripping the electrics. Called Response Services who service AEG products who said the compressor was not working. They replaced it but the freezer started to make a very loud noise and emitted a burning smell. We received a replacement freezer. That one also trips the electrics.

Quality control appears to be non-existent at AEG. These products are not cheap. I have never ever had any problems with Hotpoint and I would probably go back to them. Has anyone else had problems with AEG?

Well yes as you mention it the OP has.

You would be better off starting your own thread.

We bought an AEG condenser drier. After just over 12 months, it died on us. Bear in mind it hadnt done many cycles as we are just a two adult household. AEG totally blanked us. Their correspondence was at best, dismissive considering the amount i paid for what i thought was a higher quality appliance. I ended up pursuing the retailer and got it repaired and costs recovered. I would NEVER buy AEG again. They are actually made by Electrolux by the way and AEG no longer exist and havent done for a long time.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Most companies nowadays go under a different company name, before long most high street white goods will be made by one company. And yes all the letters we've had are headed Electrolux but I have to say their correspondence was and has been great.

For a two year old fridge/freezer you would be lucky to get 50% of the price you paid new, nowhere near 80%. Secondhand white goods have little value, as new ones are so cheap now in real terms.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I didn't think I mentioned 80%? I was just wanting a replacement or a refund for it as it had an inherent fault from the start, and now as it turns out I will get a brand new up to date model when this repair fails again in about 7 or 8 months

Thats a great result. Well done. Perhaps they have learned what customer service is after i recounted my experience via various social media channels

  • Just found your post while searching for others who'd had the same AEG issue.

We bought ours in October 2013. Since then we have had four doors (including the original one) because of this fault. It drops every few months. They too told us that they were unaware of anyone else having the issue!

After the fourth one they said to contact them if it went again and they would replace the appliance. A week or so back it went again, so I replied to their original email to request the replacement. This they have agreed, with no problem and many apologies, otherwise it would have been the fifth door in under 3 years!

The fact that I haven't had to argue this and they are full of apologies leads me to believe that this is indeed a well known design fault. At the time when you first experienced it we would already have done too, so they did know. There must be other people out there too?!

At least we are getting a brand new appliance but what a lot of hassle we've been through. I'd rather have had a three year old model that had actually been fit for purpose for the last three years! Otherwise, it is a great appliance and we're happy with it!

Yes it's been a struggle! I'm just glad I complained and got the extra years warranty which they were very willing to give. I knew they wouldn't admit it's a common fault but what really annoyed me was the last engineer that came out who replaced the door.

He said he'd never heard of it and asked me what I keep in the door and I told him, usually 2 x 4 pints of milk and small jars in the three smaller shelves on the door. He then told me I should only keep a maximum of 6 pints of milk and no glass jars in the door, just eggs!
