Replacing pads and disks

My VW Up has done over 70,000 miles and the front pads are up for replacement soon, although it passed the MOT one month ago. The disks are worn, but VW servicing made no comments about them. Is it worth going to one of these brakes and tyres places to get the pads and disks done? Or Halfords? I like the idea of having it done on a Saturday morning.

I had a bad experience with one of these some years back, and I was taken for a ride, so to speak. Not much money, but off putting to be lied to.

There is also a good local indie garage but he is only open weekdays. He claims to use quality parts.

every person should make it their lifes mission to find one mechanic who they trust. Do not take it with halfords they will just make more work that you dont need.

Take it to the indie if he comes recommended. You most likely won't get a good service from a chain, especially on a saturday when they are busiest and have extra low-skilled staff on hand.
  • You can get the parts yourself online and just ask the garage to fit them. Eurocarparts is a great site for that.

Ask people from work, friends, family in the area forwho they suggest for an independent garage.

Thanks all. The indie garage did my last car, and did a good job. The current car is 4 years old, so now out of VW warranty. I'll go back to the indie.

Would advise against this as sometimes there is lots of difference choices, change over years/parts etc, also if there is an issue with the brakes after they fit the garage will say nothing to do with me as you supplied the parts.

Do it yourself or take it to a local garage, be clear with what work you are asking them to do - change the front discs and pads + any wear indicators - if the pads are wearing normally thats all you will pay for, if one of the calipers has been sticking they may try and charge you for new sliders or if they damage the rubber seals but nothing major.

Very much this. Would you expect to be able to take your own burger into McDonald's and just have them cook it for you?

    No?

I would just do it yourself, it doesn't take long and is easy to do. Just watch a few vidoes on youtube and you won't have any problems.

Main dealers are often little more than an Indy for routine stuff these days.

I presume VW commented on the pads when you had it serviced. In that case get the pads changed. If they didn't mention the discs, then presumably they are well within spec, so why waste money replacing them? Take to Halfords and get the pads done and ignore any comments about the discs needing doing as clearly VW would have mentioned it if they did.

VW charge £259 for pads and disks. They charge £429 for the cam belt, which needs doing next service but one.
