Speaking of there was 3 times when I put my tv on at a slightly louder volume than usual to hear banging and crashing instantly from upstairs (as if they were angry) still muted enough that standing in hallway I barely heard a sound from tv and sitting next to it I could barely hear the words(remember I put it on low normally so this would be normal volume for most) so my everyday noise seemed to disturb them yet their drilling which is far louder I am expected to put up with.

Well if this is the case, the sound proofing can't be as good as you were thinking. There lays your problem.

A slightly raised TV should be ok, if the sound proofing was good.

Can you hear theirs? as they don't sound like they would be listening to their TV at low volumes.

I would talk to them, also check out the sound proofing and then decide if moving now is the better option.

Its hard to gauge as my neighbours downstairs never hear me to the point they asked me a few times if I was moving out as they hadn't seen or heard from me in weeks and I never hear tvs anywhere not even in my flat, and whenever I have guests round who heard the noise at first they tell me its not bad but when they hear it multiple times during the day they then say at that point its bad (except the one today as you could hear sawing and drilling no matter where you are in the flat.

At least we rarely hear anything part about 7pm it all goes silent apart from now and again they do a little bit of diy now and again.

I do hear their washing machine on often but if anything should say the flat is very well insulated as you barely hear a hum until the spin cycle at which point you barely hear anything unless you know its there, my pc fans create just as much noise to me as the washing machine upstairs in terms of what noise does seep through.

I can't see how they would hear your TV then, think you may have got that wrong.

Sounds as if it's just inconsiderate people, the trouble is, the less noise they hear from you the more they will forget you are there and carry on thinking they live in a detached house.

You need to have a talk, don't think of it as a confrontation, might solve the issue, chances are tho, if they are doing DIY in the early hours, I can't see them reducing the noise any time soon, sad to say.

It is confusing either that or the child hears it as more sensitive (or over sensitive) to the slighest vibrations.

There was a few times I tested this, one time I was in front of pc all day and tv was off, I decided to listen to a 3 minute song on youtube (on low) instantly I heard something like either a loud stomp or someone startled and dropping something heavy (or a child dropping a toy)

Just as the video was ending I heard 2 stomps, didn't sound like someone hammering the floor to say be quiet but was just loud individual noise.

90 minutes later put something on tv low and again instant bang and another bang 3 minutes later so I muted sound and silence

And similar last night when I put a single song on.

So it doesn't sound like someone is stomping the floor to tell me to shut up but does sound like someone is reacting to the noise.

And it is a confusing situation I may not hear noise for days then what sounds like a kid running about for a hour around room and/or toys getting dropped which are annoying but you understand kids make some noise and I rarely hear noise past about 7pm at night (I assume thats when child goes to sleep, which furthers my idea that its the child making the noise) but was a few times they did diy to about midnight just when first moved in but it wasn't constant it was 10 minutes of constant drilling, then hoover then a break then another 10 minutes then a break of about 15 minutes.

I am a little paranoid in the sense the 4 times I have seen them since they moved in every time they have given me dirty looks and not even said hello to me despite me smiling and saying it to them.

Just a question - are you alone in the flat? It does sound like you're overthinking a lot of this. I'd try and adjust to it if I were you. I started hearing my neighbour's tv now and then through the wall and it really annoyed me at first, but after a few months I don't even notice it now. It's always off by the time we're heading to bed.

From what you have said I think your neighbour's are just living normal life and not doing anything excessive. They can't be expected to deliberately live in hushed tones all day when they're home. It's their home and they deserve to relax.

Your neighbours might not realise how much of their noise you can hear. You've tried going round and they didn't answer the door so perhaps pop a note through the letter box if they don't answer next time you knock.

My upstairs neighbour in my last home used to play his music very loudly (glass rattling loud) and his tv was blaring (I could hear his neighbour through the wall from him pounding on the wall shouting, "turn that effing television down!") but it wasn't until I rang his bell and spoke with him, explaining how much of his noise was filtering into my home that the penny dropped and he turned the volume down. Then again maybe is wasn't the conversation but fear of a sleep deprived Weegie was knocking on his door again. :D I could still hear some noise from his flat but nothing as bad as before.

I fully sympathise with you. I am underneath people, luckily without a child. That would drive me insane.

You need to pick your battles. I don't treat it as confrontation but you need to communicate to them how much you can hear the noise. I would not be putting up with any DIY out of social hours.

If they ignore you and worst case scenario, play music loud in the early hours on a weekday. Some people are so selfish, they need to be taught a lesson.

I am but considering my guest has been woken up early and had to have a nap a hour ago due to being woken up early then its not,

And other guests when they have been round say its loud but tolerable as everyday noise but then later say when they have been here a few hours as its been ongoing they say "I see what you mean its getting annoying"

I don't want people to whisper or anything I want them to talk just be aware of going above a certain level of noise (and its not too bad if its the odd bit of louder than usual but not all the time)

And I don't care when I hear footsteps upstairs only when the child does it and even then when its more heavy stomping than just running about.

Put up with a third morning/day of DIY today and went up to speak to him, and also noticed my clothes drying on balcony were covered in sawdust.

I found out he has put wooden flooring down in every room of his flat!!!! And he didn't aplogise about the covered clothes just went "oh well it must of done that by accident" and seemed really eager to get me to leave and I was very polite the whole time never making any gestures and actually very soft spoken.

Just worried now with wooden flooring (it was carpet before) it will get worse.

Im sure thats against some sort of tenancy thing being in an upstairs flat.

Oh I know too well. My neighbours are very very very noisy. They drive me absolutely demented. For that reason, I am looking at moving out now.

About time I started to enjoy my life again and not jump out of my skin each time they decide to slam doors / run up and down steps etc etc.

Good luck to the OP. Hope you manage to get it sorted.
