Cellar

Was with friends who are looking at a property in the North and in the blurb it says
Agents Note
External security camera system. There is a concrete base under the entire house providing storage accessed from two concealed trapdoors
Just wondered if anyone had come across a kind of underfloor storage under a whole house as stated , thats not expressed as just 'cellars' ?

I asked Google to define the noun cellar and it says "a ROOM below ground..."

Maybe the space under this house is too small to be classed as a room, or perhaps it is only accessible from the outside or via some other awkward means. Eitherway, perhaps it's not a "room".
Estate agents are quite creative with their descriptions. For my house they described an area at the end of the garden behind a dwarf wall and filled with gravel and a few shrubs as a "raised gravel planter".0 -
CCTV?
Concealed trapdoors?
Are the current owners in danger of being kidnapped?!0 -
Hopefully not Marksoton lol , but its funny both it and the 'cellars' was put like a special announcement, wasnt it.

Yes, I suppose Ill find out if they did decide to go and look at it, I just wondered if it was something recognized as a particular sort of 'cellar' --and wondered too if it was any kind of thing to be worried about if it extends as stated under the whole place. The build is I think around 20's 30's art deco style.0 -
My house has CCTV. I enjoy watching the footage of my dog yell at the binmen on Tuesdays.0

Depends where you are in the North. A lot of places in York still have flood cellars (especially businesses). They're not intended to be used as rooms; they're for when the groundwater rises and you'd rather have it in the basement than the kitchen. Or when the river comes knocking and you need time to get everything to the first floor. They're not deep/high enough to stand up in, but you can store bits in them if you're really confident you won't need them for their original purpose.Mortgage

Interesting. Didnt think theyd have to look for flooding problems as its a fair way up I think above the Dee Estuary , but food for thought .0 -

Nice house. The only way to find out about the cellar is to go and view. The storage could be useful as there's no loft."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0
