Benefits I'm entitled too

Hello

I've been on DLA and ESA for years, DLA(about 8 years) and ESA(about 3 years). However recently, I've got a job at the airport, its minimum of 25 hours contracted however i can do as many hours as I can. Will I be entitled to any benefits after I start work?

DLA isn't means tested so you can still claim that if your condition is unchanged.

    ESA would stop.

You may be able to claim working tax credits depending on your exact circumstances (age/partner/income etc).

A word of caution, if you're getting e.g.Higher Rate Mobility DLA and your job involves doing a lot of walking or standing around etc then this could compromise your DLA Mobility award.

The same goes if your receiving DLA Care.

Are you aware that you can do Permitted Work whilst on ESA?
  • You may be entitled to working tax credits after having been on ESA - the rules are a bit complex so take some advice about this.
  • Thank you for the advice!

Will I be able to get a back to work grant or anything? like a uniform grant or a grant to keep me going until my first wage?

You need to speak to your job coach who should help you with moving from benefits to work. Remember to ask about tax credits.

If you have been on income based ESA for 26 weeks or more you will be eligible for a 4 week 'run on' of housing benefit after your ESA finishes.

Remember that ESA is paid in arrears so you should have a couple of extra payments.

    Your DLA will also continue.

If you can't manage financially then you could ask work for an advance in your wages/borrow from family/friends to tide you over.

You could try asking your job coach if there is any local assistance (usually there is some kind of fund) but the automatic entitlement to back to work grants have long gone.

    Great news about the job.
