Complex metering config.
Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone can shed a bit of light on my situation and maybe give me a way forward.
Me and my partner moved in to our new house in January and have the energy supplied by N Power. Before the seller sold the house there was no gas central heating just electrical only house which had storage heaters in. After getting the gas cenral heating in to the house she got rid of all the storage heaters for radiators.
There now if two meters in the house, one to our normal distribuation board and one to a fuse switch which is turned off and fuses pulled (I know this is the supply to the storage heaters also it hasnt used any power since moving in). So now all we want is the old meter taking out so we can use a single meter. After contacting N Power for the last 2 months we have been passed from pillar to post which mis-information, terrible customer service. Its got to a point its angering me when calling them up.
We have tried to switch to other energy companies but they wont touch us.
I've had enough of dealing with them on the phone so i have lodged a complained form with N Power to try and get this meter removed.
So im just wondering if anyone has any information with this subject or even personally dealt with this problem. Also if anyone can reccomend a different way forward or see what happens with the complaint?
Thanks.
Rob.

2 options
1. Stay as you are
2. Get an expert in to finish off the job the seller started and didn't complete.
Once you get the OK to proceed by the expert you employ, then contact nPower and ask them to change the meters to a single meter, either a single rate one or an E7 one (as per whatever sort of tariff you would like).
A charge may apply for such work
Then you can switch suppliers to your hearts content
(if what you are saying is you've done the above, and nPower will not process your order for new metering, then follow the supplier's complaint procedure)0 -
Hello,
Are you in Scotland? My husband and I went through hell a couple of years ago due to one of these meters. At the time we were with E.on: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4598189
It was hell and they owed us about £300 which they returned. So I'd give you similar advice as footyguy above. Our only way of changing the meter to an E7 one was to raise a formal complaint. We were told that an electrician could connect the heaters to the new meter but we didn't need to do that eventually as the man who came to change the meters reconnected everything for us. No other energy provider would want us because of the flipping meter.
Follow the complaints process and insist, get the meters replaced for an E7 or a regular one, it'll save you so much hassle and money!0 -
Thanks for the reply, I think I'll take both of your advise and keep following down the complaints route. The heaters are gone from the house it's just the wiring after the mains in to the '2nd' meter to a fused switch which remain.
When I contact N Power they sound as though they don't fully understand what I what from this. I tell them the house previously had storage heaters which have now gone hence the reason I want the second meter gone as there is no need for it!
Thanks again for your advise

It's not a case of just taking out the second meter - you have to have the whole metering changed.
And that's why you need to seek the expert advice of a suitable electrician first, as you internal rewiring, etc may be needed.0 -
NPower won't be able to give you much advice if they're as useless as E.on were with us. They don't seem to understand non-standard meters.
The complaints procedure was useful for us because it allowed us to change the whole meter system for free due to the hassle, but we had arranged for an electrician to come over (we didn't need him in the end). An electrician will give you good advice.
Good luck!0 -

Your right, the reason they won't touch you is because your property will have had more than one Supply Number. There aren't many suppliers now that will support a switch on this setup.
I would ring your energy company again and ask them to book an appointment to remove or disconnect your de-energised off peak meter. This is the term used by energy companies to describe the meter still being at the property but the main fuses have been removed. This could have been done by an energy companies engineer originally. A private electrician would only be needed if any part of the heating circuit was still active and needed to be rewired. If the off peak circuit is de-energised, then the circuit should not be drawing any power through the meter.0 -

Hi Rob
Thanks for letting us know,
The other posters are correct in advising you'll need to make sure your internal house electrics are disconnected from the off peak meter, as if there's anything still connected and we remove the meter, it can potentially mean your appliances and/or heating will stop working.
If this has definitely been done (we recommend checking with an electrician), then I'm happy to arrange an appointment to disconnect the off peak meter, and switch the main meter to either an Economy 7 or single rate meter, as required.
