Can i receive benefits to rent a place if parents are moving home?

My idea was to find a job and rent a room somewhere, but I have been unable to find a job while the house has been on sale. My parents home is now been sold, but the problem is they're moving to an area which is not central and the public transport is poor. I am sending applications out like a madman trying to find a job, so hopefully I hear back from someone asap.

It is also a great time for me to move out because I have been getting too comfortable at home so this is the best opportunity to live more independently and I am at an age where I personally feel I need to live by myself. I have been searching for rooms to rent and there are many in the area (more central to the main city) I could afford. I have a little money saved for a deposit for a room.

Would it be possible to claim any kind of benefits when I move for the meanwhile until I get work? Who would I need to speak to?

  • I suspect if they have room for you in their house it might be better for you to deal with the poor public transport for a bit, until you get settled in a job.

    That's what I'd do anyhoo :)

    Good luck!

I suggest you get a job first before you start looking for accomodation, you cant afford it now so whos to say you will find a job soon ?

You don't say how old you are - if you are under 35, I think it is now, if you are entitled to any help, it would be towards a room in a shared house - not a studio or flat.

You can get housing benefit at the LHA rate for the area you fancy, you can look up the rates. The amount might not cover your rent, if you are paying it you can get help with council tax.
Many people aim to get LHA to pay all or most of their housing cost, if you expect to get work, I would pay extra and live somewhere you actually want to live.
I would agree with others your most financially astute move would be to find work first.
