Moving from btinternet to utvinternet...

Options
Anybody recently moved from BT?

I'm at the end of my first year - it was so crap in the first couple of months that BT ended up giving me free BB for six months. Now they are offering to discount my 'Option 2' package by £3 per month as an incentive to take out another 12 month contract - but it still works out at £19.99 pm.

I can get utvinternet for 8.99 pm for three months, then 14.99 pm (same package). Called BT today and the best they can offer is now 17.99pm - and they won't budge. Tempting to move to save over £60, albeit some hassle over changing emails etc.

Anyone doner this recently? Any big hassle?

They may budge a bit more.

Ask for your MAC code , you should get a few phone calls offering more discounts.

To transfer , get your mac code, phone up utv and say you want to transfer and heres your mac code and thats really it. Internet may be down for a few minutes(in theory) (but chances are it will be done during the daytime, so it may not affect yourself..)

for emails , go out and get your own domain name (thats what i did) , i never use the free emails provided, and if i move to another provider i dont need to worry about email address'. I think my domain name + email (virus scan + spam filter built in) costs me £20 every 2 years...

That's interesting Nockcardwell. I have been put off changing ISP because of the email problem. How do you go about getting your own domain name. As you can tell I'm not very techy.

I don't wish to put a spanner in the works, but I think you'll be down for more than a few minutes. I was moved from BT to UTV for my work broadband and it was down for 4-5 days. I have also recently moved house which is in a different exchange area from my last line. I am now on day 12 of no broadband and it's infuriating.

I moved from Plusnet to IDNet and it never lost sync at all, just typed in my new user ID/ password and was connected immediately.:T

There may be cheaper ones out there, i have been more than happy with one and one. The above link is actually better than mine.

They give you 5 real pop accounts and then up to 150 additional email address (alias')

These alias address like abc@abc.co.uk redirect to one of the real pop accounts.

The email address' also have virus checkers (symantec) on them ( mine i believe is mcafee, and in using my accounts for over 4 years , receiving approx 100 emails a day i have only ever received 1 virus.)

For emails i use 2 address' , one for personal/friends to use, the other to sign up for other websites/forums etc....

    How to setup:
    (For outlook)

    Hope that helps.
  • Don't move to utv! They are awful, their support is awful and their price is cheap because they have no staff and no overheads. AVOID!

Have to agree with the comment about UTV above, they used to have decent support and decent staff but are now run on a shoestring. Look elsewhere, maybe even consider Sky broadband if you have their TV.

  • Well I've now got my MAC code - they never called me back as promised - I had to call them again and really had to insist on it. I think I will try Sky actually - I already have Sky and their TV/telephone/broadband deals are well-priced. Not going to do anything for another week or so as I can't afford to be without internet at the moment, even for a few days.

    Try https://www.adsl24.co.uk
I moved to them recently and not had any problems. Changeover was instant. I have full 8 meg service.
BT Internet will downgrade you to a dial up service when you go and you can keep your e-mail addresses. Unfortunately you cannot send mail but can receive. I got round this by using gmail and setting up the BT Internet accounts within it.
Sky don't have a good reputation. Look here before you decide.

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
