Does this make sense or too good to be true?
Hi.
Thank you for reading. I am on a standard tariff for both gas & electricity with SSE Southern Electrics. I pay currently £84/month for gas & £37/el, all by DD. I filled my details and checked through the MSE Cheap Energy Club and it looks as if I am heavily overpaying. It's quoting me as a top option the SSE 1 Year Fixed v6 with savings of £548/year. This sounds too good to be true considering that it's from the same provider. I understand that I get better rate as I am signing 1 year contract but am I really going to save £548/year? The Cheap Energy Club also lists other providers with savings over £500/year but some of them with quite bad customer service ratings and some small companies unknown to me. Do you think I should switch to the SSE 1 Year Fixed v6?

Standard tariff is always way overpriced .
The price you quoted will be an estimate not an actual price .Full yearly price will depend upon what you actually use .
But yes move off the standard tariff will save a couple of hundred for definite .0 -
If you are on the 'Standard' tariff, almost any other supplier would beat the cost on a 1 year fix
You have hade the figures from MSE, but like any comparision of prices from other suppliers, look at more than one source
Try switchwithwhich who present the figures in an unbiased way, and several others who advertise in the press and on TV.
Then make up your mind from there, having first searched this site for customers comments on any particular supplier0 -
@zizu73
When you searched did you use the last year's actual energy usage from your yearly statement (or taken from the bills for the last year) or did you enter the amounts you paid monthly by DD?
For the best results, always use the actual yearly kWh used for both fuels.0 -
That sort of saving is quite possible from standard tariff. For me, with EDF gas, my fix costs £443 pa and their standard rate is £756 pa, £313 or 70% more. Electric from E.ON costs me £408 and their standard rate is £538, £130 or 32% more. A total saving of £443 pa or £37 a month over standard tariffs.0

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. It's quite clear from your answers that I need to move away from the standard tariff to get a better deal.
dogshome - I will check other sources first before deciding what's the best deal.
gsmlnx - I entered the amounts I paid monthly by DD. I need to check the actual yearly kWh used.0 -
My fix with FU presently costs me around £800 - when it finishes at the end of April, their Standard tariff will push that up to £1350 an increase of £550 per year or around £46 a month.
So I'm switching to GB energy which will cost me around £720 for exactly the same amount of energy.
You really need to get off the standard tariff.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
