Many suitcases are now sold with TSA accessible locks built in.

The first time we went to the USA, OH's suitcase was broken into by TSA, rendering it useless. Expensive Samsonite, too.

Subsequently, we used TSA accessible straps for some years, but recently changed to very lightweight with said locks.

OH's case has been opened on another occasion. We never put any valuables in either case.

With that in mind why wouldn't u consider a zip in the hold if you leave your case unlocked.

I always leave mine unlocked as well but do use a cable tie

For journeys outside of the US (the majority of my trips) when my cases remain locked at all times - including straps (which offers a little protection to the combination locks as well) and the cable ties.
Little point in locking your case in my opinion. Most locks are trivial to unlock and I've always thought they could serve as a signal that there's something worth stealing in your case.

I agree that a determined thief will get into your luggage if they wish to - I don't subscribe to the assertion that a well secured case will indicate that something valuable is inside. I believe (right or wrong) that placing more time consuming obstacles on my luggage will hopefully deter a thief who would select a more easier target.

It is also unwise to assume that the TSA locks are secure as I suspect that many copied master keys are in circulation.
