huge electric bill

Hi all, trying to sort this out with no luck so far.
Me and my ex got both our names on electric account with Scottish Power. We have not paid electric for 2 years. Not good I know. We have now split up, I've moved out...my ex is trying to get me to pay him directly. Scot power no help, explained to them the situation and they say that my ex needs to ring them to sort it! I'm happy to pay my half of the bill, but can't get anywhere. My ex is basically saying that I need to pay him, and he will sort it. I don't trust him to do this.
Thanks in advance.

You are both 'jointly and severally' liable for the whole amount of the bill. If it is passed to a debt collection agency(DCA) they will come after from whoever they feel they are most likely to extract the cash. it is also likely to have an adverse effect on both your credit records.

Presumably he cannot afford to pay the whole amount of the bill at once?

The likely outcome is they will get a court order and install a pre-pay meter, with the meter set to recover some of the sum owed each week.

Hmmm - Not paid an Electricty bill for 2 years ?

The key thing is that you had bills and chose to ignore them, or you did not recieve any bills for that 2 year period

Cardew is absolutely correct in that if your Ex who's name is in the account does not pay, SP are perfectly entitled to come after you for the money.
However, if you have not had bills over the 2 year period, the "Back billing Agreement" would apply and you can only be charged for the last 12 months, and that 12 months is back-calculated from the day you did get a 'first' bill

Despite the relationship problem, it is in both your interests to co-operate as far as Utility billing is concerned
