Travel insurers who cover pre existing conditions reasonably

Does anyone have any current recommendations for travel insurers who cover pre-existing conditions at a reasonable price? Not looking for dirt cheap, just reasonable. We don't have anything "big", just a slew of minor conditions but a couple with complicated names and one that might turn into cancer in the long run, which seems to scare insurers as if it would just "spring into life in the space of a holiday" :(

I'm particularly interested if anyone knows of a company that does a "fit for travel" basis. Eurotunnel did, and they have been not bad at all, but they have stopped doing World Wide, and we want to go to the USA.

That would depend completely on your circumstances.

Have you tried going on a comparison site such as comparethemarket, confused.com etc? They have insurers who take pre-existing medical conditions.

I have used StaySure (I'm 30), Insure and Go and Topdog in the last couple of years for over 10 trips (both EU and non-EU) which covered my health conditions of previous broken neck, previous subarachnoid haemmorhage and anxiety.

Try bupa, you dont have to give name, address etc to get a quote. We only have european cover so can't speak for the world wide cover but worth a try:)

I've used both Coverwise and Explorer insurance in the past. For my upcoming holiday I could not get a quote (for a couple) for less than £200 - I'm going to Canada and my previous trip 3 years ago only cost £130. I have just upgraded my bank account to include worldwide travel insurance, and the cost of that for annual cover is less than the single trip quotes, the cover is more comprehensive and it includes RAC cover for the UK. I was surprised there was no loading on the monthly premium despite declaring 3 pre-existing conditions for myself, and one for my wife.

I must of tried every insurer going over the last week but nobody would insure me for pre-existing conditions, had to take out a policy with Staysure today excluding all conditions and any related consequences from my illnesses, all of them pushed the boundaries though with regards to what they consider are potential related illnesses.

Try insure & Go. They have changed their health questions since last year and you only have to declare if you have the more serious conditions or if you have had hospital treatment/referral in the past year. Mine is European though. I can't comment on worldwide.

I have used InsuranceWith before and will be using them again, found them very competitive. HTH.

  • On paper, I've also got quite a list of minor pre-existing conditions. Have used Staysure twice before for month-long, non-activity European holidays: their comprehensive cover cost over £300. However, buyer beware. Staysure Assistance were appalling when I had an accident on my last trip, repeatedly failing to return calls and provide practical assistance.
