JSA refused as not paid enough NI??!!

Options
Hi,

My fixed term contract ended mid march, from working since June 2014 and have just found out (when everything has been passed ok by the dole) that my claim for JSA has been refused as not paid enough NI the past 2 years.

As mentioned, I've worked full time from June 2014 to mid March 2016 and had been claiming JSA before that (following redundancy after working 14 years since leaving school!).

Found my tax summary from 2014-15 and I paid £790 NI so therefore would assume that I would have paid enough in the 2015-16 tax year to qualify???!!

Any advice most appreciated.....apart from telling me I should never have worked so can get everything!

It's 2013/14 and 2014/15 that is currently used.

2015/16 only ended yesterday and won't be used until January.
  • Thanks. I was previously self employed from January 2014 to when I began working on the fixed term contract in June 2014.....

I've just looked up and found you can request an NI summary so have done that. Hope it doesn't take too long as need this sorted out asap!

You need class one NI contributions to claim contribution based JSA. When you are self employed you do not pay class 1 so your NI contributions paid during self employment will not count towards the eligibility criteria.

Are you not eligible for income based JSA?
  • Thanks for the info. I will qualify for income based....I've savings from redundancy so I might not get much at all, if anything.

Unless I say my savings are a personal matter, as our country's Prime Minister has done.... :)
