Stepchange has released its Statistics Yearbook for 2015.

Stats include:

• 57% of people that came to it for help in 2015 were employed
• Of these, more work part-time
• 75% of StepChange clients are renters – up from 55% 5 years ago

Personally I've noticed that lots of people who come to this forum for advice, choose to pay there unsecured credit, before there essential bills, such as gas/electric/council tax and even food etc.

I think one of the reasons for this is the aggressive approach to collections these companies employ, pay the credit card a day late, you get a £12 fine, and a plethora of computer generated mail and phone calls.

Utility companies don't employ these tactics till much later in the process, lots of people are unable to cope with the demands for Payment and feel pressured to pay up, when they can't afford to do so, even though recent changes to debt collection means creditors must look at affordability, more needs to be done.
