Roge builders

Hi
I contracted two build to make an extension and fit a new kitchen in. That was back in January.
They have been delaying deadlines over and over again and they have never seem to be taking the job seriously and had other jobs on the side which means that many days they did not turn up.
Last week I told them that the final deadline was going to be this Friday and this deadline would be final. They have not turn up yet and I doubt they will.
The have left almost every possible job unfinished and I am fuming as I write this. We still owe them £1000 but it is going to cost me more to bring new builders to finish everything.
I would like to see what are my options here. I think a visit to trade standards would not be unappropriated. Any one had a similar experience?

  • You owe them a grand, how much work is outstanding and how much have you paid so far?

I paid them around £5000 and the amount of work left is for around a couple of weeks. I will probably need to pay an extra £500 if i need to source different builders but i am just annoyed in the way some people trade leaving everything a mess. I want to see where my rights stand on this.

You would need to send them a letter telling them they need to finish the works to the contracted/agreed standard and give them 14 days to do this. You will also need to tell them that if they do not complete the works then you will instruct another builder to finish the works and use the outstanding money to do this. Any money spent over what you owe them will need to be recovered through the Courts (if they don't pay up, which I highly suspect they won't) and you should make them aware of this too.

    Regards
    Phil

You've been quoted £6000 to build an extension and fit a kitchen?

You think £500 is two weeks work?

The way that the OP worded it, I thought that they are budgeting £1500 for the extra work to be carried out. The £1000 that they still owe the original builder and £500 extra.

Okay. If one builder costs £75 a day.

I refer back to my original question. £6000 for an extension and kitchen fit?

Are building control involved at all?

You can see why he's in this mess.

At £75 a day sounds like it was his job that was on the side.
