What in the name of goodness has made this hole?!

Hi all,

I have a new build house which is still in the middle of a development which is being built. There is open land across from us, but on the whole the area is built up/residential and commercial.

Walking past the side of my house today (where there is a little planted area), and spotted this

I'm not savvy with wildlife etc, so what has made this - and more to the point - what should I do?!

Looks too neat to be wildlife. Sure it's nothing to do with the cable coming down the wall next to it?

If it's been raining recently (i.e. surrounding ground is damp), line hole floor with white paper & see what footprints you get! You can google what rat, cat, hedgehog & squirrel footprints look like.

If you find it is an animal, but still cannot identify it, ask the Springwatch guys to bring their night-vision cameras!

    Good luck.

Nope definitely not to do with the cable, it was hollow/burrowed out all the way through  our front edging stones had also been dug up a little at the other side of the house, but obviously couldn't get down past the stones.

The piece of land isn't ours, it just lines our property. Also, think paper would blow away as it's on a really exposed area?

    It's really bugging me! :rotfl:

Edited: the cable has been there for almost a year now with he soil always being flat around it, it's not just recently fitted.

Could be a rat ... they will be looking to expand their area as the weather warms ...

Have a look on pest control sites to see if any 'evidence' helps to pin-point if it is indeed a rat ...

No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thought.
Only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only after the last river has been poisoned. Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten.

I'd say it was about 5/6 inches across at the plant end, but smaller (around 3 inches) at the wire end.

Looks like the work of a drop bear. Don't walk under any trees.
