Submitting a meter reading once a month makes management of your energy accounts simple. You have only yourself to blame for ending up with a £700 catch up bill.

You have underpaid by nearly £60 per month which is an alarming underpayment. What is worse is that you claim that it keeps happening . Why didn't you change your DD upwards?

Paying by receipt of quarterly bill is more expensive as most suppliers only offer their cheapest tariffs for monthly DD. If you want to pay quarterly then you expose yourself to seasonal variations which for most people is very different. The vast majority of customers find it more convenient and easier to manage by equal monthly payments.

I don't know how much you have been paying but you hint at £150 per month and an annual total cost of £2500 which is a massive amount. With a seasonal distribution your winter bills are likely to be well over £700 per quarter.

If I were you I would be taking a hard look at your energy consumption and monitor it regularly and find out what is causing such high bills.

I put in a new boiler recently and found it simple to do daily checks to ensure my consumption was reasonable and it led to much more careful management of our energy without compromising our health or warmth.

Getting to grips with Energy charges can be very satisfying.Good luck.:)

According to energyhelpline, there are currently no suppliers offering this, but check with Eon and British Gas as I think they may do.

There may be the odd other supplier too, (look for variable monthly direct debit) but if you want to expand your options a bit more, would you consider paying quarterly in full rather than monthly? I guess most suppliers are not prepared to bill (as opposed to issue statements) monthly as it's probably not really very cost effective.

Many suppliers offer paymnent on receipt of bill quarterly. Most offer various ways to pay, including via Direct Debit (for the full amount of the bill)

Just to confirm footyguy, we do offer Variable Direct Debits. With these, payment in full is collected directly from a customer's bank about 2 weeks after a bill is issued. They're more expensive than our Monthly Direct Debits as they don't qualify for lower daily standing charges like the monthly ones do. Customers wanting a Variable Direct Debit need to contact us with their bank details. It's not something they can set up online themselves.

Customers who prefer monthly bills can use the 'Real Time Billing' tool on our website. If they pop in meter readings, they'll have the option of either seeing the balance that would result or actually creating their own bill by choosing 'request a bill.' Customers need to register with our website to use this tool.

Hope this is of interest footyguy.

With Eon you can change your direct debit to what you want it to be within your online user account. It works fine and i have never had a big bill or adjustment at the end of a year. I also give them regular readings to minimise any chance of this.

Glad our online 'Direct Debit Manager' is working for you giraffe. For the benefit of others, customers registered with our website can change their monthly payments through this tool. Comes in handy should circumstances change.

Provided accounts are billed up to the latest meter readings, payments can be changed by up to 20 per cent up or down. By up to 5 per cent up or down without readings. Before confirming the new amount, we'll advise by how much we anticipate accounts will be in credit/debit by the time of the annual review if payments are changed but usage doesn't alter as expected. At the annual review, any credit over a fiver is automatically refunded. Any debit balance is included in the ongoing arrangement and spread up to the next review.

Thanks for giving us regular meter readings giraffe. It's a great way to make sure billing is accurate.
