Hi all of my Scottish friends I need some advice. My wife and 15yr old son want to go to Edinburgh for a 3-5 day city break in mid July-mid August they are flexible on dates sinces its the school holidays.
They will be flying in from Belfast and don't want to hire a car so they need a hotel that is handy to the city centre and not to difficult to get from the airport to hotel. As long as its clean we don't need a 5 star, something like a Premier Inn or Travelodge would be fine or a family run hotel as long as its not too expensive. Really I need advice on the best location and hotel in Edinburgh city centre with them not having a car. I'll be back with questions on things to see after I get the hotel sorted out.
Should I book my flight (with easyjet) and hotel separately or try for a city break package? And if so, who with?
Last question (for now:-)) is there a "best" grouping of days where it is cheaper for the hotel i.e. not at weekends or say Monday -Thurs etc?
Thanks for any help/advice offered and for you patience with me....:D

I usually stay at the Parliament House hotel when I stay in Edinburgh. It's walking distance from Waverley Station, convenient for the city centre and shopping, bus stop about 2 minutes walk away. It's also close to the Playhouse, if you feel like taking in a show!
I tend to book flights and hotel separately when I go away - I find it's often cheaper. Last time in Edinburgh, I booked direct with the hotel and got a good deal.
Have a great time. Edinburgh is a fantastic city break destination!0 -

The Edinburgh Festival (5-29th) and the Edinburgh Tattoo (5-27th) are both on in August and accommodation prices tend to rocket. Unless your wife and son are bothered about these events, it will be cheaper to go in July.

The week before the festival starts is worth looking at. We were there last year and whilst there were no venue events, the street performers were out in force. Mercure Princes Street had sensible prices and it's next to the station and tram stop from the airport.
Also agree its a great city. Not too large, plenty in the city to see and you can get a train to plenty of other places. The Royal Yacht tour is well worth the entrance fee.0 -
There's a choice of Tram or Airport Bus to get from the airport to the centre (or taxi, if they're feeling flush!)
The tram can drop them at Haymarket, there's a Premier Inn there, or on Princes Street, where there's another Premier Inn. That would place them right at the heart of things.
If they take the Airport Bus all the way to Waverley Bridge, there's a Jurys Inn barely 50 metres south of Waverley Station.
Take a look at booking.com - it shows you on a map where the hotels are, and also shows the route of the tram, with its stops.0 -
Have a look at Premier Inn Park (the gyle). It's not in the city but is a minute's walk to the train and tram. Train and trams run frequently.
It has excellent sound proofing so is quiet. The staff are excellent as are the prices if booked in advanced. We are staying there for 4 nights in May for £140. It has a Costas, bar and restaurant.
We stay there twice a year and are looking forward to returning.0 -
We have stayed in Travelodge at Waterloo Place a few times. It is 5 minutes walk from Waverly train station, at the top of Princess Street and around the corner from the Playhouse Theatre. For what we paid it has been good value for money. Also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express opposite the Playhouse which was good as breakfast was included, however it wasn't as quite as the Travelodge (noise from street).0

Holiday Inn Express Cowgate is very central too, yet quiet 10 minutes walk from Waverley station and tram to the airport. The one mentioned above (Picardy place) is OK but noisier.0

And it's a qood option. Dunkin doughnuts, and big Tesco both nearby. Only downside is the windows in the rooms don't open. Better breakfast than HIX.0 -
Friday night and Saturdays are typically cheaper, but not if the festival is on.
Nicest way to and from Airport is the Tram (free Wifi) - buy return ticket for best value. You can just by this from one of the two banks of machines by the terminal tram stops (ones on the left ccan be empty when ones in front can have queues). Electronic tickets App is available for smart phones.0
