I was thinking about investing £1000 in hbos shares. I know about three months ago they were at about £11. Now they are down to £9, would this be a good time to buy them, wil they go bk at up?

Who knows - other banks have fallen further compared with the price at beginning of the year eg Barclays and Northern Rock.
If you can afford to lose £1000 (highly unlikely that they will go bust but no guarantee that your capital will appreciate short term) go with your gut instincts. The dividend is worth having.
Before investing in shares make sure that you have a pot of money saved say 3 months take home pay to cover emergencies and rainy day instances, because sod's law says that when you have to sell in an emergency the price will always go down!0 -
I buy a lot of shares and in July bought some bank shares (Not HBOS) thinking they could not go much lower. Since then they have fallen about 20%. I am hopeful they will recover eventually, or get taken over, but it could be years, or never. Always remember when buying shares that the lowest price a share can fall to is zero.0

Everyday is a buying day. The thing is whether you are buying in a bargain. Try to ask you 10 times if you are convinced that you have bought the share in a discount. If you are convinced, buy it right away. Otherwise, wait for the next golden opportunity.
That's the way how I buy my shares.0 -
Working Lunch today was very interesting and listed the best mining shares.
Top of the list was RTZ (an ex employer). Apparently that's the place to be, mining shares. I would still go for those with high returns like United Utilities. I'm also interested in Woolworths as I just can't see them going down. the shares are less than £1 now. Also, Centrica - the Russians are said to be interested in buying this one (Gazprom I think). I'd love to dabble in shares all the time.0 -
Sorry to be bringing back an old thread. I hope the OP didn't buy any banking shares at those prices...look at them now. I just wanted to warn people thinking the bottom has been reached for banking stock. I'll re-resurrect this thread in a year or so...0
