Paying a rental deposit

Hi
I've just got a house, through an agent and I'm due to move in around May 2nd.
They're asking for my deposit to be paid now, is this normal?
I thought deposits were paid on moving in.:o
Its a large amount and I will struggle to get that amount and pay all the other costs of moving.
I had planned on using my deposit from my current property to pay the new deposit.

no, deposits are usually paid before you move in and certainly when you sign the agreement.
Who told you you were to pay on moving in?
Never bank on using the deposit for the old property to pay the new one, because there will always be a delay of up to days to months before you get it back, especially if there is a dispute.
I generally got my deposits back about 3-6 months after leaving and they were big EA."It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

Have you signed a contract? Has the LL/agent also signed?
Are you being asked to pay
* 1st months rent? This can wait.
* a holding deposit? Pay now but it should be refundable
* a security deposit? This can wait.
Having said that, if the LL/agent insists on earlier payment, and refuses to sign a contract and keep the property for you without these payments, there's not much you can do (except pay or find somewhere else).0 -
I see.
In the past I've not used agencies and gone to private lls with no issues about paying my deposit on the day i move in or getting my old one back, in full and on the moving day.
I just wanted to make sure this was normal practice.

No contract or anything signed.
I seem to be being asked for the full, one months rent up front, deposit.
I'll then pay the month rent in advance when i move in.The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter0 -
Remember they need to protect it with-in 30 days of receipt, not 30 days of tenancy starting0

How do you find out that they've done this? The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter0 -

You should receive all the information with-in 30 days too0 -
If you've got your deposits back on the day of moving out before, they probably haven't been protected (well, that and the fact you don't know about deposit protection - if you'd been notified you might have found about about the DPS). It's doable, but the extra level of bureaucracy means it usually takes longer even when everyone agrees how much is due back.Mortgage
