Unable to increase limit

For some reason I am unable to increase my credit card limit, although I have been with Barclaycard for the past 12 months. The initial credit I was given was (and still is) only £400, so I struggle to even rent a car for a couple of days, as they often require a bigger deposit.
Payments always made in full and within time limits, do you have any suggestion or shall I just forget about it?

Check your credit file and see if there's anything untoward there?

Is this your first/only credit card, any history that might affect this?

That's what surprises me. I have checked my credit score and it's always been increasing. Experian gave me +50 points over the past month only, and I don't have any negative history. However, this is my first and only card, but I've been a Barclays customer for 4 years already.

You've had the card for 12 months and your credit rating sounds good. Maybe you should try and apply for another credit card, say, MBNA or Tesco. They tend to give you good credit limits.

I am a bit worried about opening a new credit card. Does it do any good if the money I'm planning to spend is still the same, and if I always pay in full at the end if the month?
Shorter question: what are the benefits (apart from, maybe, a bigger limit)?

I always have more than 1 credit cards just in case my usual one suddenly doesn't work, then you'll have a back up.

As long as you keep track of your spending and be responsible about it then you shouldn't be too worried. If your plan is to spend the same, as you mentioned in your post, then it shouldn't matter how many cards you have right?:D

Another benefit will be, with higher limits, you will then be able to put down a deposit for the car rental!!

However, after applying for a second card, hopefully with a higher limit, and you feel uncomfortable with having 2 cards then you can always cancel your Barclaycard.

    Good luck!!

If you do apply for a second credit card don't close your Barclaycard in a hurry. It will do no harm on your credit file and with a good payment record will be positive for lenders to see given your limited credit history.

That's really odd... I opened a barclaycard account last October with a £400 limit, I had a letter from them last week saying it was increasing to £800 from early May. Maybe you could give them a call or send a secure message online and ask why they are saying no?
  • I have a barclaycard cc and if you log in online you have the facility to request and increase or decrease in credit limit.

If you have been requesting increases every week or so they may see that as desperate not saying you have, but depending on the frequency of limit increase requests it may be an issue. Just wait until they offer you an increase, after that try them every 3 months for small increase. Working wonders for me as started with 150 limit, they increased it to 750 without me asking and since then every 3 months I have had every limit increase I requested, I too repay in full every month (by ddr) but make multiple payments per month so only once has any direct debit been taken.
