in Credit cards
I have just ordered my credit report from experian as I was turned down for a credit card last week. My credit rating should be top, as I have NEVER paid anything late and I've never been turned down before etc.
I have found out that somebody at my last address has been ordering stuff in my name, then not paying for it (£300 ish)! Also, searches have been carried out on dates when I wasn't at the address. The date of birth they have given is not mine.
Please somebody tell me how I can clear my name. I'm shaking cos I can't believe somebody has done this to me.
Thanks in advance.

I hardly think that worrying about being impersonated constitutes being a drama queen!!

This is identity theft fraud and you should seriously consider placing a protective registration on your credit file with CIFAS. This should stop any further fraudulent applications for credit being opened in your name. Also contact the company concerned ASAP and advise them that you have been the victim of impersonation so that they can investigate the debt. I work in fraud prevention and see this ever increasing problem day in and day out. It's imperative that you take action quickly.

If you don't have anything useful to say, don't bother. I am not used to being a victim of crime, so I've never had to deal with the police before. I wasn't sure if they would be interested as I've heard stories of people reporting worse crimes, and they don't do anything! And I'm allowed to be dramatic because I was supposed to be applying for a mortgage this month, which is probably gonna be a bit awkward now dontcha think?!
Anyway, back to the point. I have got a crime number now and I've managed to get in touch with one of the companies. I've got to send proof that I didn't live there at the time etc. I've then got to wait until morning to phone the rest as they are all closed. Hopefully they will be able to remove the "footprints" of their searches as well.
Does anybody know roughly how long it takes to fix a messed up credit rating?!0 -
There's a link at the bottom of the page where you should be able to obtain all the information you need. It's relatively simple to deter what has unfortunately happend to you.
If you really want to protect your good name/credit file AND possibly get free indications and warnings of attempted fraudulent activity of someone using your address or personal detalis for credit or credit cards then have a read of the following.
www.freeidprotection.co.uk
Check out the media links on the home page.
CIFAS Protective Registration is fine, cost £11.75 per year but be warned it is designed to protect CIFAS (Credit INDUSTRIES Fraud Avoidance System) members. Not all credit facilitators are CIFAS members.
The advantages of uisng the system described at www.freeidprotection.co.uk are twofold. It reaches all lenders and not just CIFAS members, and it's an awful lot cheaper.
