Hi all,
Have spent the whole day feeling quite down
I am about to enter the third year of my degree in English Literature. We got the reading lists for the coming year just before breaking up for summer, and have done quite well in getting to grips with most of the set texts (have already read my way through 2 units and all my dissertation texts), there's one unit I can't seem to get into... Victorian literature - have always had a certain dislike for it and this year it just happens to be my double unit.
I feel down because last year, we had to study Romanticism and I HATED every moment of it - to the point that by the time exams came about, I performed badly and managed to drag my overall grading for the year down to a 2.2
How do others cope when they come across something in their chosen subject that they really dislike?? I know I have to bite the bullet so to speak and just get on with it but if anyone has any tips for making it a little bit more bearable, I would be grateful...
Ok, rant over, back to Wuthering Heights

Don't panic - I didn't enjoy parts of my philosophy degree and finished year 2 with a 2.2 average. However I enjoyed my third year more plus having the finishing line in sight made the less enjoyable parts a bit more bearable, and I graduated with a good 2.1. Chin up, it takes about a week after graduation before you start missing being a student like crazy!0

Keep smiling... Wuthering Heights improves with every read! It was one of my A level texts, and, at the time I hated it, but it's now one of my favourites! To be fair, I really did (and still do) hate every word of Jane Eyre tho!**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0

hi hun,
i do eng lit too, and my way of coping with boring texts is to either read them in chunks and think of a reward at the end (i.e. if i read through all of this i can play on the computer or read something better!) or to be competitive about them and think, right, if everyone else can read this, so can i!!!! i know it's hard when it's a boring book but maybe if you visualise how much you want a good mark you might just think of the boring book as a tiny stumbling block in your attempt to get the best grade possible hehe :j
sometimes things seem a bit more interesting if i read around the book as well... but i dunno, i have my very big procrastinating moments as well! besides...maybe the fact you're not totally in love with the books means you'll be able to criticise them from a less biased viewpoint hehehe hope this helps! (i have to go read my boring book now...!)0 -
I hated my whole degree, you just have to keep going and you will get there.:beer:0

Sarah xx0
