Solicitor Recommendations?

Hello,
I've just had an offer accepted on a property and need to look into getting a solicitor. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ideally I'm hoping to pay less than £1000 but as a FTB i'm not sure where this sits within the 'average' price. The property is in Nottingham but I've been told the solicitor doesn't necessarily need to be local.
Any recommendations or even just companies to avoid, would be appreciated.

Do you mind if I jump in on your thread too junebug? I'm in a similar situation.Whatever you do, avoid any suggested by an estate agent like the plague.
Good to know, what about solicitors suggested by the mortgage lender? Halifax gave me a quote of a non-local solicitor for about £1200 which seemed high to me!0 -
Best thing to do is ask friends/family they know the local ones, we do not.0

£1,200 does sound high. The ones recommended by the mortgage lenders are probably the minimally qualified and socially inept conveyancing monkeys too. If something out of the ordinary comes up, they scratch their balls. You're better off with a proper solicitor."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0

Do NOT use any services referred by the EA or lender. Be they legal or financial... :wall:0

Thanks all. Duly noted.0

I just sold a property in Nottingham myself and used a company called Ison Harrison based in Leeds.
I can thoroughly recommend them. They were very professional and chased up the slow moving buyers constantly.0 -
I used RMNJ last time and were pretty good and were quite cheap. You are right, doesn't make a difference if they are based in Cornwall or Newcastle, I have not met any or stepped in their offices in the last 5 transactions.0

I've used a couple of firms in the Nottingham area:
Rothera Dowson (several offices around Nottingham)
Thomas Solicitors (previously Constantinou Solicitors, Long Eaton)
Both gave good service and it's worth contacting them for a quote. Previous posters are correct in saying that being local is not necessary; however there are advantages - you can just pop in when they ask for ID or for a signature, and you can visit in person if things seem to be taking too long.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
I have been using a company called Harrowells in York, I tried a few in Leeds where I live but Harrowells provided far better value for money and have been fantastic, holding my hand every step of the way (also FTB)0
