Big city move and a little worried finically

So I'm 53 and my partner is 59, we currently live in Darlington both work part time and get benefits to support.

We've decided to make a big move down to Birmingham as our daughter lives there and it would be a better life for us. After 2 years of looking, we've been given a massive opportunity from an over 55's housing association.

They have offered a flat and been told it's free to move in from next week but we are worried sick about leaving our job and current rented house so suddenly, but so desperate to move.

If we simply quit and make the move, could be receive some benefits to support us for a number of weeks until we get on our feet?

Many Thanks

In theory you could make an application for JSA as you will be job seeking (It might be UC in that area so be prepared)

In theory they could also refuse JSA (UC) and sanction you because you have left your jobs voluntarily. If you have paperwork which shows that this flat has only recently been offered and you had no time to look for new jobs then they may consider this 'good reason'. Plus, if you have any medical issues which means that you need to move nearer family then that night help.

You can also apply for housing benefit and council tax reduction even if you do not get any JSA(UC) because of a sanction)

However, you need to consider that you probably need to give notice on your rented property and this may involve extra fees/rent for 'surrender' or ending the tenancy early.

It might be worth asking the housing association if they could 'hold' the flat for you. All seems a huge rush and if you had more time you could at least prove to the job centre that you had made job applications in the area (you could do some on line applications now and print them off to show you are trying to find work)

If you have to move into the new flat next week then you may be able to get HB for two overlapping properties if you have no choice in the matter - or start paying the rent on the HA property and not live their for a couple of weeks.

Have you family who can support you financially?
  • Have you been saving for the two years you've been looking, so you can support yourselves for a while?

Am a little bemused as I was checking your posting history to see if there was any information which might help with advice and you appear to have changed age and status!

Please tell me someone else is using your account or you are posting on behalf of someone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Can't wait for clarification....

    :rotfl:
  • I've posted it on behalf of my mother in law, as she doesn't know how to use anything to do with the Internet. Is that okay?

:) Now why didn't you say that at the beginning.....
  • It wouldn't make a difference, I've also posted on behalf of my partner in the past. Why is this an issue for you? If your not here to offer advice than there's no reason for you to be commenting on the thread. Thank you

It's fine - no need for the narky tone. It would have been a whole lot clearer if you'd stated this at the start.

So, do they have any savings? They've been planned a move for a while. If they do, then they might be able to claim HB or LHA and Council Tax whilst supporting themselves in respect of the rest of their bills.
