Hard Drive errors

Restarted my PC this morning after a windows update (MS XP) it loaded ok then it said it couldn't load the desktop, so i restarted it, then when booting it said 'disk read error' 'press Ctrl Alt Del to restart' Still wont boot after many attempts.
Put a different hard drive in set to master with the faulty one to slave and booted fine, it recognises the other drive but as soon as i try to access it it says 'disk is not formatted, format now?' so i've pressed no and left it. Is there anyway of getting the files of the hard drive? I hadn't backed it up for a couple of months and i've loads of photos on there that i don't want to lose
Would be greatfull for any help anyone can offer

Most HD manufacturers guarantee their drives for 3 years, I recently returned my Western Digital 200 Gb after checking the warranty status on their website and registering for a return authoisation. (you need the serial number)
It cost me a little over £5 to send it to germany and recived a replacement within 2 weeks (probably a refurbished one)
of course this will not help data loss, my adivice on that is
backup backup backup CD-Rs/DVD-Rs are so cheap as well as the drives £10 ish for a dvd writer
But better than using it as a doorstop.
