On behalf of a computer less friend so if you have any need of additional information I may be slow in responding.
They have applied for help with their mortgage interest repayments.
Do they pay at the lenders rate or do they have a set rate?
What if you rate is lower or higher than that rate?
How long before they start payments?
Are they sent direct to the lender?

A little extra information here:
https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/38%20EW%20Mortgages%20-%20help%20with%20payments/Page-02.aspx#0 -
It is a set rate and is generally paid direct to the lender. If the lender's rate is higher than the set rate it is the claimants responsibility to pay the balance. I'm not sure of the situation if the lender's rate is lower than the set rate.
For new claims there is a qualifying period of 39 weeks. It has recently been extended from 13 weeks.0 -
Thank you. I'll have a read and pass the information on.
One more question, I'm not sure if this is applicable as we haven't really discussed it in depth.
What if the ex is still on the mortgage but has since emigrated and has nothing to do with the house or bills?
I know their application is in and at the moment they are trying to manage the monthly payment themselves.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

If they are jointly on the mortgage then they both have a liability to pay the whole of the mortgage so the SMI should be awarded.
If only the ex's name is on the mortgage then each individual case is considered as to whether it is allowed.
Time they got their affairs 'sorted' if either applies!0 -
Update.
No ex on mortgage, their rate fixed at 2.85%, and they in the 13 week rule.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4
