Gas seems too high?

Hi guys,

We have moved into a new renovated house and just had a rather high gas bill at £475 for 3 months. (Eon)

It's a 3 bed semi and only has two of us living here. We have a log burner so havent used the gas much for heating.

Is there any way this could have been worked out wrong their end? I fail to see how i've been using £160 odd worth of gas per month over the past 3 months!!

    Is the bill based on a reading or an estimate?
    All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

    Did you give them a meter reading when you moved in and did you keep a record of it?. Go and read the meter now and subtract the original reading from todays reading and that will tell you exactly how much gas you've used.

    You can then check the bill. If it's wrong or an estimate then tell Eon and get it corrected. It usually has information on the bill letting you know how to send in a meter reading. Most energy companies a phone line you can call or you can go onto their website to input your reading.

    The bill was generated after i gave the reading via phone, i took the reading myself.

    Did you give a meter reading when you moved in? That is the important bit.

    If you did then they will have two exact meter readings and the bill is accurate.

    If you did not then they will have had to guess an opening meter reading. This may not be in your favour but without an opening reading there is now no way to prove what it was when you moved in.

    I switched through MSE from SSE to EON duel fuel big saving (£500 year) but within only 3 months (winter period) EON seem to know me very well !!! and want to put my d.d. payments up soon put a stop to that.

    Ignore the DD and £'s - at the very best this is a guess by your supplier - what is important is your ACTUAL usage.

    Have you had a bill ? and does this show if you are in credit or debit?



    To be saving £500 you must have been on the very worst SSE tariff and switched to the very best EON and have a very high consumption.
    Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    As usual, we are in danger of conflating the unrelated issues of two posters. If the OP provided the supplier with a meter reading when they moved in, and one recently, then estimated consumption is not a factor. If an initial reading wasn't provided, then it is indeed possible that the OP is being billed for energy consumed prior to him moving in. To get further advice, the OP needs to answer the question posed by CashStrapped.

    Already some excellent advice on the thread, so thank you very much.

    As has been asked, I understand you've provided an up to date meter reading and we have billed to that reading, but is the account started from an accurate read? Did you take this when you took responsibility for the property?

    Once we know if the bill is accurate, we can go from there and I can offer more help and advice.
