Is it possible he's got a couple of abscesses part draining?

The smell from those _pale_. The old boy got one on his head and when it opened up, the stench was awful. Cue a prescription for penicillin and cleaning the area/irrigating it with saline to stop it closing up twice a day for a week. The tiny hole on the top of his head was hiding pus located all the way round underneath his jaw, going by the way I had to stroke/massage down there to get the muck out at the top.

The only other thing that stunk nearly as bad was when the Floofy Cat's anal glands were part blocked and I massaged the evilness out of them when cleaning her rear end up. It's nearer the smell of fox mess than the usual cat poo smell.

(Mind you, all my cats have endured baths/showers once a year since they were little. The worst for Floofy Cat was after she had a tummy upset - I shut the pair of us in the wet room and just stood there, watching her reenact the old sideshow trick of The Wall of Death for five minutes).

Either way, it's worth getting him checked out at the vet, even though it requires a trip in the Box of Doom, as he might need antibiotics.

One of my Maine Coons got particularly whiffy and it turned out to be chronic gingivitis. The infection in his gums meant he washed himself with bacteria-loaded saliva. He had 6 teeth removed at about 5 years of age and several more (after a recurrence of smelly breath) a few years later. Now he is mostly toothless, but quite sweet-smelling!

    ^^^This.

One of my old girls had an abscess that used to absolutely honk - it just wouldn't respond to treatment and the vet showed me how to wash, 'squeeze' and clean it thoroughly. It took months to fully control. Not a great job but necessary.

The smell did hang around her even just after cleaning.

I think you should have the vet look your boy over for wounds, skin infections, gland trouble etc. Don't assume it's the FIV.

I'd be careful with using s Ferminator or any steel brush until establishing that his skin is OK.

Let us know how he's doing and good luck.
