No space to upload a covering letter?

Have seen a job I'm interested in.

It's advertised with Reed and another smaller independent agency.

Reed have space to upload a covering letter, the other agency don't.

The job advert just says to apply online - nothing like "with a CV and a covering letter".

Who would you apply via?

(Appreciate it's a silly question, but in dilemma mode over it as been pondering whether to spend next few hours doing a decent covering letter)

I once got invited to an interview based on my covering email alone. I had attached a CV but for some reason they could not open it.

If you are prepared to send the time writing a really good covering letter, definitely that option it will give you an edge. If you are just going to send a cut and paste covering letter then take the route of sending your CV only.

    Good Luck

EDIT: I've had a re-think. I would go via the independent agency as that is probably where the job was originally placed. Reed may have picked it up from them and displayed it on their site. You can always upload a CV with a covering letter attached to that, thats how I have got round the no space for covering letter issue before.

Am veering towards "You're going to have my covering letter"

    Thanks.

This ^^^ Add an extra page at the end of your CV document and type the covering latter on that, so it's all in one file.

Can you tell who the role is with? If so, can you apply directly to the company in question? If so I'd do that. If you can't tell or whatever, then I'm not sure. People made valid points. Reed perhaps more likely to get more CV's and narrow it down to their 'favourites'. Sometimes agencies tend to put forward the folks they know and have experience with.

No idea who the role is with. Have Googled lots of different terms and nothing comes back. I'm going to put it in via the independent agency, not Reed, as Reed feels too big.

  • Send an excellent CV only - no covering letter. Covering letters only have zero advantage if everyone is doing the same.

Including a CL simply reinforces desperation for the job.
  • The independent agency will call you if they are interested and talk to you. They are not in the least bothered about platitudes in a covering letter. they can make all that !!!! up for you when they talk to the employer.

Reed are not really interested int eh covering letter either. Employment agencies know better than to worry about nonsense like that. It's different if an actual employer asks for one.

I must have imagined that interview I got based just on a covering letter.

From an employment agency? if you put the details you would have put in a cv in a covering letter, then they'll be fine with that. They will call you if they are interested (if they are any good) and then forward your details on the the employer in the format the employer requires from them.

Employment agencies are just interested in sending he employer as many semi-viable candidates as they can.
