I have just had a house extension, and now am trying to decide on a colour for the kitchen.I know alot is down to personal taste, but I still can't decide icon_rolleyes.gif.Please give me some ideas. How do you decide?

Here are some thoughts:
The kitchen is called Sophia cream,it is from Wickes.

There is a light coloured wood effect laminate floor, and darker coloured walnut-effect worktops.
The area is about 40m square, with lots of light (french doors and huge window area)

Now,my idea was always to make a feature of the units.keep everything else neutral, but then bring in colours with easy to change accessories, such as pictures on the wall, cushions, coffee cups, toaster and kettle, vases, etc.

Over the last few weeks,I have spent about £40 on tester pots, painting swatches, and now I am just going around in circles.I started with cream-like colours, but it just camouflaged the units,I have gone a bit darker,(light mocha, cappucino, mushroom coloured),but worry that by the time everything is painted,it will look too dark:o.

One painter who visited to give a quote, suggested magnolia. When I bought a tester pot, this turned out to be actually almost identical to the colour of the units-not sure if it males sense to use that as a starting point.

A friend this afternoon, suggested using different colours on different parts of the kitchen (different sides of beams on ceiling, chimney breast, etc).

When I was originally having plans draw up at Wickes, the designer randomly coloured the wall-space athe lightest shade of purple/lilac,and it looked beautiful-are the other colours I could use as a base, that lots of different colours would go with, for when we want to change the look,as mentioned earlier.

Any suggestions of colours/tones I could start looking at,would really be appreciated.Painter coming on the 12th,and I still have no idea .

  • If you want a pale neutral that isn't quite cream or white, then I can recommend Slaked Lime from Little Greene. For a kitchen you'd probably want to use eggshell though you may get away with their wipeable emulsion.

I was also going to suggest a pale green, looks really nice if you introduce some plants/herbs into the kitchen too.

    Something like this?

A lot of opinion is going to be based on personal taste.

The most important thing to look at is paints that will withstand a kitchen environment, moisture resistant and will withstand a good scrubbing then look at the colour palletes from that range

i would echo person_ones view that a pale green does work well in a kitchen, especially if you have white woodwork it will help keep complement the doors and woodwork and bring out the whites without darkening the room

We have this one in ours http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Durable-Matt-Sage-2-5L/p/121911

Slaked lime isn't green. It's off white.

Oops! I see lime, I think green. Maybe a difference in perspectives? ;)

  • In this case it's slaked lime as in calcium hydroxide, not the fruit. ;)

Why paint, consider a mosaic wallpaper, which will have a base colour - but the reoccurring pattern will contain different shades.

The kitchen in my project is painted Green Umber from Dulux. It's pretty subtle if you're not that adventurous.

You definitely need to move away from using colours from the same cream/beige pallet.

This year's colour is Rose Quartz. I've recently painted my kitchen in Farrow & Ball's setting plaster. A very pale dirty pink.

A cream kitchen should have something to contrast with.
