Marriage Tax Allowance

Hi everyone,

My husband gets carers allowance for looking after our son, approx £250 per month. I earn approx £34,000 per year. Do we qualify to claim the marriage tax allowance or does my husband have to actually earn a salary for us to qualify?

Thanks in advance,

BDFSH x

He just needs a taxable income under £10,600 (for this tax year).

  • Hi,

Last week (march 2016) my partner applied for her marriage allowance partly to be transferred to me (I am working, she is not).

This all went well. I got a letter today that for 2016 it is all fine and that I got my new Personal Allowance for 2016 and the Transfer of Allowance been added up (12.100 in total).

As I just did it last week I got a question. How do I get tax free allowance of 2015 I am still entitled to? This allowance should be £ 1.060. Do I get this automatic backdated and on my account or how do I get it?

If you're PAYE, check your P60 when you get it from your employer in the next couple for months to see what tax code was in effect at the end of the year. If it shows the Marriage Allowance then I think that HMRC should work it out themselves when they come to check everyone's year end positions, and you'll automatically get a refund cheque sometime in the summer.

This is what happened to my OH when he was made redundant in November a few years ago - as he didn't get another job afterwards he had overpaid tax for the year and a cheque from HMRC simply arrived the following summer without him having to do anything.

If the tax code change doesn't appear to have reached your employer then I think you;d have to contact HMRC.
