E10 or E7? Can I switch?

I would welcome advice on whether switching is possible/advisable from current situation:

Currently use around 12000kWh per annum 23% Day and 77% Night on E.On Energy Plan tariff.

Meter has E10 set up with 3afternoon, 2 evening and 5 night hours of the cheaper rate electricity.

Other suppliers are showing as offering cheaper day and night rates. What determines the hours of cheaper rate that you receive? Are all tariffs that offer day/night rates suitable.

Help gratefully received.

You can't switch with the current metering. Attempts to do so invariably end in tears

Hello calv2002 and welcome to the Forums.

Economy 10 meters are designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in every 24 hour period. These are at night, in the afternoon and during the evening. To work, the meter will be wired into the dedicated heating and water heating circuits at the property.

Do you have a 2 or 3 rate meter? If it's a more modern 2 rate, the 10 hours covers all usage. If it's an older 3 rate meter, only the 5 hours at night will be for all usage. The remainder in the afternoon and evening will only be for the heating/water heating going through the dedicated circuits.

We've only the one tariff available for this type of meter and that's the one you're on. For more tariffs, both with us and with the other suppliers, you can look to change to a more conventional Economy 7 or single rate meter but I'd recommend asking a qualified electrician to check the set up first. Given the way these meters are wired up, changing to another type could affect your heating and hot water. Best to be safe and check.

We're looking to replace the older 3 rate meters as they're nearing the end of their shelf life. If you have one of these, we'll do this free of charge and offer a choice of a 2 rate Economy 10, Economy 7 or single rate meter. If, though, it's a later 2 rate we're currently charging £64.76 to do this.

Don't want to teach you how to suck eggs but a good way to save money is by using as much electricity as possible during the off peak times when all electricity is charged at the cheaper rates. Totally understand, these times aren't particularly sociable. Timers on high load appliances might help. The times the off peak rates are active depend on the region and make of meter. If you drop an email to the address in my Profile, I'll be happy to let you know what they are.

    Hope this is useful calv2002.

You can switch to another E10 supplier, but only about 5 suppliers support it, so E10 does not appear on any comp sites. You'll need to do any comparison manually.
A switch to E7 will require a new meter and possibly additional rewiring on the downstream side-both at your expense.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I really wouldn't recommend this. There may be 5 suppliers that support E10, but I'm not sure how many of those accept new applicants (and if you switch or transfer away they may not even let you go back )

Unlike E7, which is the same no matter which supplier you choose, E10 is not the same; E10 can vary by supplier ... or in the case on Eon it seems it can even vary within the same supplier (although, as above, they are attempting to rationalise that issue)

As I said in post#2, attempts by customers with E10 metering to switch invariably end in tears.
  • Thanks everyone. For info I have a 2 rate meter.

I really don't fancy the meter change scenarios, so I guess I will remain a loyal E.On customer for a while yet.

    Hello footyguy.

As we're the current supplier and it looks like the OP has a later 2 rate Economy 10 meter, we'd continue to support it if they were to switch and then decide to move back.

    Hope this is of interest.

As you've a 2 rate Economy 10 meter calv2002, all 10 hours of off peak electricity will be for all usage and not just the heating/hot water. Might make it a bit easier when setting timers as not all the cheaper times are in the early hours of the morning.
