I'd say about 40% of my job with level 2 students is behaviour management, especially now, as they 'have' to be there. 5 years ago, it was because they chose to be at college.
Now 6th forms & schools cherry pick the cream of the crop and we mostly get the ones who would rather get a job, but have to stay in education until 18.
The top down bullying, as a previous poster said, is bl@@dy awful. Our HR dept is trying to bring in 900 hour contracts, as opposed to 828 for the same pay. Also extended notice periods: a whole term, instead of 2 months, reduced sick pay periods, and a whole raft of other changes. Our union is doing its best but even a strike hadn't changed anything. You also don't get the holidays off, but have 28 days to take in the holiday periods, apart from after August 25th onwards for enrolment and training in the summer holidays. No teacher training days in FE. I have so much toil accrued from open evenings and parent evenings that I can't take because there aren't any days available for me to take it.
I'm starting a p/t masters in September, now we have loans, so I can look elsewhere in my field (tourism & hospitality).
I blooming well love teaching, but red tape & management are making me hate getting up in the morning.

Compared to schools, 40% is probably a pretty good percentage.:o

Many FE students have had to be there since the introduction of YTS in the 70s (just before I moved into it) but thank heavens I got out before we lost the Silver Book conditions in the 90s.:(

Of course - however the earlier editions of the book are far stronger on self analysis and self assessment than are the later editions and this seems to me to be more what the OP needs rather than just advice on CVs and interview technique.

Are your experiences solely with the state sector, or have you worked in a private school before? I ask this, because the teachers I know who work for private schools are generally much happier.

I was not replying to a post about a book?

Ulitimatedingbat, TBH asking for a few ideas on a generalised money saving forum is not the best way to go about choosing a career. Maybe that is what led to you choosing the wrong career in 2012.

A couple of people answering you on here are qualified careers advisers and have pointed you in the right direction to seek further help. I strongly advise you to seek professional help from either where you completed the PGCE or your degree. The careers services may be able to help you particularly at this time during the easter vacation. Also use prospects.ac.uk.
The Parachute book suggested by Miss Biggles is also great.
    Hope this helps.
  • Loanranger - My PGCE course - THeir answer was change schools and right now I'm not sure i want to do that. I have no problems seeking advice from my degree university.
I don't believe I chose the wrong career in 2012 and I think it is rude to insinuate as such. I still love my career, what I do not love is all the extra crap that comes with it right now. I love working with children, and still have a passion for teaching. My 9-3 days are fab because I actually feel like I make a difference, not that I made the wrong choice.
How else do you find out what is out there without asking? I am of course doing my own research, and have asked the question on specific teaching forums but I figured here was a good place to ask too.
Right now in my life, no career is worth my marriage or my health, and if I stay in the career that I love, for things I don't, I risk both.

@Cadon - I'm looking into private schools at the moment for options as well.

I think one or two posts here may make people potentially identifiable and therefore need to be deleted PDQ in case they lead to misunderstandings if anyone involved reads them.
