locking wheel nut, lost key

My car is having a service and mot today. It has passed the mot :j but they can't find the wheel nut. I had a puncture last year so I'm wondering if the guy who fixed that walked off with it by mistake.

The garage are having a think, but they might have to drill them.

If they do, do I have to replace them with locking nuts do you think? The car is a peugeot 206 diesel hdi from 2005 which does have alloys that came with it, but they are pretty old and a bit scratched and stuff.

Would non locking nuts be just as good, if there is such a thing, as I'm guessing that would be cheaper to replace them with.

  • Oh thanks for that, it doesn't look that bad then. I guess I thought if I didn't get locking ones I don't have to worry about losing the key again.

Lets hope they magically find it, or thing of a cheap way round it then.

I would not bother, just get normal ones to replace them.

I doubt anyone wants your battered Peugeot alloys, wheel theft is not profitable anymore, unless you really have something special (and expensive!).

Have to drill them??? Take the car elsewhere..

Find a small tyre shop they should have the tools. Not teh big national chains but one where they actually get their hands dirty.

  • I'll see what they say when they call back I think, if the mot has passed they can't need to take them off for that, it would have just been part of the service. So if they say it will cost a lot I'll just have a look at sorting it once I move house I think.

The cam belt needs doing at some point soon as well, but was putting that off for a couple of months for now.

  • They just called, they haven't got a plan. So it has passed the mot which is the main thing I needed. I'll have a hunt around the car myself, then take it to some other places to see how easy they are to replace I think if I can't find it either.

If they are original equipment for the car, the main dealer might help. In the same circumstances I took my car (also made by a manufacturer beginning with P, but German) to the main dealer and they looked it up on their computer and pulled the right key from the workshop and removed them for me while I waited. No charge, other than for the four non-locking wheel bolts I bought at the same time.

I had a similar experience with a VW Polo. The dealer had a set of all 20 (ish) possible keys and found the right one by trial and error.

Most tyre places other than Kwik fit will have a dynamec or similar tool. A soft metal blank is fitted to the tool and hammered into the locking key forcing it to match the shape. An impact driver is then used to rotate the tool slowly removing the bolt. Normally costs £10-£12 a wheel as a new blade is needed for each wheel but takes about 1 minute as wheel.
