Getting copies of old bank statements

Hope I am posting this in correct place. A friend needs bank statements going back 10 years. Is this possible? They bank with Barclays. They have to prove payments made towards a house purchase. If statements cant be found, where else could they go?

thanks in advance for any help

    Ask Barclays.

    And expect to be charged.

    The only answer is....
    Ask Barclays!
Either they will have them - or they will not
10 years back seems OK - if it was 15 to 20 I'd say unlikely.
They may be now in an archive microfiche somewhere in some store rather than available to staff just at the touch of a button so it will take time and dare I say it money to go and get them.
All you can do is ask and explain why and hope they will not charge too much for the work involved.

Anyway as I recall you are meant to keep your own financial records such statements etc back 6 years yourself according to HMRG rules.....

I think HMRC actually only say 2 years, but 4 years would probably be better for their purposes.

I don't know Barclay's systems but from my own work at another bank it would have been difficult to get statements over 6 or 7 years old - perhaps not impossible but likely to incur significant expense.

I'm doubtful if there is a need to go back that far to prove source of funds for a house purchase anyway, if the money has been in an account for 10 years then I'd say by now it's savings.

Keep ALL records, for 7 years, all payments of everything - if you cannot prove you paid a bill be prepared to pay it again if any error occurs or have a damaged credit file if you refuse to pay amount due or provide proof of payment occurred.

15+ years ago the local council were billing me 6K but could not confirm what for, they 'assumed' council tax which of course I provided proof of payment, they still could not confirm what the 6K was for - if even council tax and were dumbfounded to tell me going through every file they had - council tax, housing benefit & council tax benefit from when I left home at 16.

At every address history they could find nothing - other than it was manually applied by transfer based on a file in my name now deleted with no notes. Data Protection Officer the council asked them to use specialist skills and look could only find records as above for me within local authority.

Maybe I was due £600 for something ? a error in council tax ? a overpayment of HB/CTB years before? but £6000 :rotfl: either way what a farce of a council not knowing how I am due a debt

This bill kept cropping up come March every year for a few and I challenged it every year asking them to read previous years notes, on the sixth year from the date the 'transfer' from a non existent file AGAIN the yearly demand came, I wrote asking them to remove the £6000 debt as they had failed to provide evidence and the debt was now null and void in collection terms and under Data Protection they had continued to not delete incorrect data on myself they themselves admitted they could not prove was correct.

I think my old social landlord for a property I left whilst off work short term sick and then went to college informing the DWP IB I was now a student and no longer at that address or intended claiming (they should have allowed the IB claim to continue as a student as I could no longer do my old physical job, butof course they didnt) did not put a stop on HB/CTB, the social landlord I believe kept taking HB for a few months = approx £600, not £6000.

Pay £6000 with no evidence I am due it or had not paid it or its origin :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Some branches will have records of bank statements going six years or so, I think you are able to get more if you speak to your banks archive records department, but there is only a legal requirement to hold certain documents for six years before destroying.

I would question why your friend needs to go back ten years as someone doesn't have to keep records going back that far, hopefully there is a record.

    Good luck :-)

I'd have thought that whoever handled the conveyancing should be able to help?

It depends on the nitty gritty of what you actually need.
If you sent a CHAPS payment to the solicitor it should show on the statement the name of the firm and the amount - so far so good, that may be enough for you, BUT if you sent them a cheque the only record on the statement will be a cheque number and amount.
The chances of Barclays still having a copy of the actual cheque will be slim.

for those mystified at the need to get evidence from 10 years ago, it's not a big stretch of the imagination to guess that it's to do with proving the contributions to house purchase back then, in connection to a divorce now. Or could maybe be inheritance-related.

Yes, Barclays should be able to get the copy ledgers for you. It's a flat charge of £5 unless you can convince them to waive the fee. They can sometimes produce them in branch for you, or else they'll be sent in the post to you. If you need the documents to have a branch stamp on them - sometimes at the insistence of a picky council/landlord/dentist (yep, dentist, that happened) be aware the staff will decline to stamp anything you bring in from outside. So in this instance either get them to print the statements in branch or have the copy statements delivered to the branch rather than your home.

If it was for a period up to six years ago, you'd be able to access the statements yourself on Online Banking.
